Re: "The ESRB needs to be deposed."
Yeah, so, I have no problems with putting ratings on products because its the consumer's right to know what they're unwrapping but self-censorship is absolutely terrible. Universal forced censorship would put us on the same level as Germany and I don't want to walk into a store and see this:

People would throw a hissy fit if the statue of David had a fig leaf attached or if Lolita came with a big black "AO 18+ 'pedophilia and sexual deviancy throughout'".
edit: fun fact, the original statue of David did have a detachable fig leaf for when important women visited. Can't be looking at those naughty bits can you?Last edited by marcus; 09-02-2009, 05:45 PM.

Re: "The ESRB needs to be deposed."
I wasn't familiar with the word, and the way you were quoting it made it seem like you were pointing out a typo. Like you always do.

EDIT: As far as the topic at hand, the ESRB has their head so far up their collective asses that it's not even funny.Last edited by Toaster; 09-02-2009, 07:28 PM.

Nah...just did not want the other topic to get derailed, but felt this topic was worthy of discussion.
Yeah, the ESRB might have their heads up their collective asses, but at least they are tangentially a part of the gaming industry. Can you imagine how much worse it could be if people who knew nothing about games, gaming, and the gaming culture and history started dishing out ratings? Seriously, you think that would be better?

No it wouldn't. There's no real need to combine ratings. Games and television are different enough that one single blanket rating would be useless. The only real use of ratings is to let parents know something might be inappropriate for a child anyway. Parents should take the time to learn what the stuff means, and if they can't be bothered, don't get games for the kids at all.Originally posted by Perversion View PostYeah, the ESRB might have their heads up their collective asses, but at least they are tangentially a part of the gaming industry. Off topic (it's my own topic, so it's okay), but is this seriously what passes for network television these days?
So games that ostensibly teach children to indiscriminately kill without regard to consequence (even though the chances of those kids growing up to be mass murderers are slim to none) should be heavily controlled, but TV shows where a self-centered kid with entitlement issues (even though the chances of the kids watching having the same (VERY detrimental) issues are a LOT higher than slim to none) gets put in the spotlight get plum "family viewing" hours?
See how I brought that right back on topic?
Seriously, though, what is this country coming to? THIS is the reason I don't watch TV. Most of it is dumbed down, or talks down to its audience, or is extremely exploitative.

Re: "The ESRB needs to be deposed."
I had to look it up on YouTube to be sure, but my suspicion was correct. It's that disgusting Wife Swap garbage. So basically, they take two families and have the wives/mothers switch places for a week or some crap. Already you can hear the social conservatives screaming bloody murder over the idea. Can't say I blame them either. "Reality" TV is the nadir of our civilization's collapse.Originally posted by Perversion View PostOff topic (it's my own topic, so it's okay), but is this seriously what passes for network television these days?

So yeah, this kid probably does have entitlement issues, but take a look at the situation. His mother's gone for a week, and this other woman comes into the house and start calling the shots and trying to enforce a lifestyle which is probably radically different from what the kids are used to. I have no idea what the kid's parents are like, but if they've taught him not to talk to strangers or whatever, he's probably confused and frustrated because he doesn't understand what's going on. Even if they haven't taught him that, he's still probably feeling confused and frustrated. He doesn't realize just how desperate these four adults are for their 15 minutes of fame that they're willing to make life difficult for the kids. And the producers don't give a ****, they think this childish tantrum is amusing, and think the viewers will feel the same way.
Even worse is the comments on the vid over on YouTube. Like a bunch of ****ing spectators at the Coliseum. They're bashing the kid left and right. Spoiled and seflish? Maybe. Being used by the parents because they want to be on TV? Hell yeah.
And yeah, just look at how kids are getting damaged these days and see how much of it isn't video games.Last edited by orius; 09-03-2009, 11:18 PM.
