    another depression thread

My bf gets depressed quite often and it's damn near torn us apart at times. I'm pretty sure he's manic depressive, because he'll be down in the dumps and will be broken up by bursts of laughter about the oddest things. He says it's because of where he is in life (still in college at 24), but that's really not that big a deal, and I or anyone else can't convince him otherwise. Most of the time we're great, but it's these periods that are so trying. I want him to see a shrink.

    Any suggestions?

Manyak is right. Communication is the key. Talk about it, and let him know how you feel. That should be the first step. Then see what he wants to do about it.

        Yikes. That's a tough lot.

Dealing with someone else's depression is much worse (and more annoying) than having to deal with your own.

No, not really, I guess, but c'mon, we all have our bad days. Even me! But I don't let those get me down. For the most part, I've been a happy camper.

...Except for freshman year of high school but I mostly attribute that to:

            a) Cross country. Hurdling into extreme athleticism after a lifetime of laziness is kind of a huge shock.
            b) I watched and re-watched and never stopped thinking about Evangelion that time. Watching Evangelion at the same age as the anime's main character - such a formative age - is NOT a good idea.
            c) C'mon, freshman year of high school is 100% guaranteed to sucks balls.

He's agreed to see a shrink actually. We've talked about it a lot.

I guess it depends on what level of depression you're dealing with.

Kire you should just kill two birds with one stone. Talk to him while you are reeming him arse. 24 and in collage IS NOTHING!!! Compared to most people my age I am the harshest black sheep ever. I have no car, house, wife, kid, corprate job.

Good thing he's going to a therapist. Is it a psychiatrist? If so, and he IS manic-depressive, he'll probably be put on lithium, which should have a very positive effect on stabilizing his moods. However, most manic-depressives miss that high of their mania and neglect to keep on their medication, which of course causes relapses. If that happens, it'll be your job to see that he takes his stuff.

Yes, lithium is pretty scary if you don't stay on top of it.
