New Hampshire state law is pretty clear about protecting its citizens' rights to carry firearms in public. Carrying a pistol or revolver openly is permitted without a license; carrying a concealed weapon requires a license from the state or local police.

William Kostric took advantage of that law on Tuesday to show up outside President Obama's Portsmouth, N.H. town hall meeting and hold a sign saying "It Is Time To Water The Tree Of Liberty." That invokes a phrase from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

This is crazy, there is no way in hell you should let anyone near the president with a gun... right?

I think this is getting more play than it's worth. You can bet if he rose to the level of "threat", going for his gun would be the surest way to get a sniper round through his face.

The guy was making a statement with an easily seen firearm and a message t-shirt and the commentators hyperventilating about it are giving him exactly what he wanted.

So he didn't shoot it, he was just some right-wing crank going off about gun rights? I just roll my eyes; though I'm more or less firmly in the pro-gun camp, some of these people are whacked.

If you watched the interview with him on MSNBC he inferred he was neither "right-wing" nor "left-wing" and claimed to have voted for Ron Paul, which makes perfect sense. Although I agree what he did was controversial and a bit dangerous, I still think it's awesome that he essentially beat the government at it's own game.

He didnt really beat anything though. Its totally legal to open carry there, and there wasnt anything they could do to stop him, unless they forced people to not allow firearms when entering the building. The only people freaking out are the typical GUNS R BAD. GUNS KILL PEOPLE. WHY DO YOU WANT TO KILL POEPLE SIR? WHY DO YOU HATE AMERICA? people.
