For the longest time I've been trying to soak it in and understand what people mean by it. I figure it targets long-haired "desperado" types that feel sorry for themselves...because that's typically where I see that given descriptor. That and I see it used a lot here, lately. So I was wondering, what exactly is "emo", anyway?

Can someone explain to me what "Emo" really means?

Re: Can someone explain to me what "Emo" really means?
TO my knowledge:
Any sub-urban middle(or upper) class teenager(usually) that feels they have a rough life, when they are clearly better off then most. May or may not be done to seem "sophisicated" or for attention.
Synonyms include, Douchebag, pity whore, and Attention *****.
And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope

Re: Can someone explain to me what "Emo" really means?
From urbandictionary.com:
1. Emo
Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.
::sniff sniff:: "The Demise of the Siberian Traintracks of Our Rusty Forgotten Unblemished Love" sounds like it would make a great emo band name. :::
...and that's why.

It's weird, it's short for emotional, but they only show 2 emotions.Originally posted by Seraph View PostI thought it stood for someone who was overly Emotional.Find a dog, honk it's nose. If you are bothered by this sentence. I guess you're just not cool enough for the noses.

its not just appearance. people who are "emo" are self-absorbed ****s who think that no one has ever had problems like they have, and obsess over the smallest little things as if it were the greatest tragedy ever.
emo is basically an over-emotional, self important little **** who listens to terrible music because the terrible people who write the terrible music are the only people who "understand their pain".

Re: Can someone explain to me what "Emo" really means?
While I don't listen to any Emo inspired music, pity myself, selfishly whine about my life, or wear my heart on my sleeve, I have black hair, plastic glasses, and love Converse All-Stars and get labeled Emo based on my appearances.
This is absolutely an appearance issue. Another excuse for people to stereotype and belittle those who are different than they are.

I do indeed obsess over the smallest thing. I am overly depressed all the time, and hate everyone around me. And I listen to crappy music.Originally posted by Valkysas View Postits not just appearance. people who are "emo" are self-absorbed ****s, and obsess over the smallest little things as if it were the greatest tragedy ever.

Now I just need some tight jeans, grow out my hair, shave my face, and change my entire wardrobe to black.
Oh, and listen to a lot of Linkin Park.
