What do you guys think of this? Even thought I kinda enjoyed Assassin's Creed, I understand where he's coming from.

Re: Rev Rants: Donate
I totally complained sometime in some thread sometime recently about video game prices and crap and crap and everyone was all, no no, you are wrong, won't work, blah blah. So I'm gonna watch what all you losers say to this. Go on, let's hear your pearls on this one.Last edited by Eso Teric; 08-05-2009, 03:47 PM.

Re: Rev Rants: Donate
As much as I don't like the idea of having physical representation of my videogame collection, the era of digital distribution will make it easier for me--and everyone else to vote with their dollars. No more Gamestop aping profits from their games. But can they really *****, when they release games that cost $60 and have a final play-time of no more than 10 hours? I think not.
With the trend in technology and gaming to constantly push the envelope in terms of what's graphically possible, and then you have a game like Cave Story--which is ****ing amazing and was made by one person--you have to wonder if developers have been chasing down the right rabbit hole.
I think that these indie game developers should follow Radiohead's lead with digital distribution. "Pay whatever you feel this game is worth to download" while hinting at what the game would originally retail for, and then for people who pay X amount of dollars they will receive something in the mail like a deluxe box set and then throw in a PayPal donation button on the website for people who want to help support you even further.Last edited by Toaster; 08-05-2009, 04:21 PM.

Re: Rev Rants: Donate
We are getting close to finishing Wanderlust and are debating whether to sell it or release it free. We took a poll, and A LOT of people said the game is worth $10, but they also went on to say that they wouldn't pay for an indie game, which I think is complete bull****. If the game is good, the game is good, it shouldn't matter if it was made by some big company or a few people.
Ah well

Re: Rev Rants: Donate
Flowery idealistic gobble dee ****. The basis of an economic system is exchanging money in return for a product. No one is going to invest in you unless they expect an equal return.
You can't force people to donate; if you do it's not called donating. If I give some chuckle head 5 bucks because I like the look of his product, I'm expecting the end product to be good. If it's not I'll be ******. If I like said product and donate 5 bucks afterward then I'm not doing anything different than what this guy is suggesting.
Besides, Assassin's Creed may have sold millions but that doesn't mean the people who worked on the game made millions. The hundred something programmers and artists working on Assassin's Creed probably make 30-40k a year. Nobody becomes an artist expecting to get rich. If you do, you either have a powerful market cornered or you're bat**** insane.
There'll always be people who don't want to pay for a product. This is unavoidable. If you think selling the game would make a good return value then slap a price on it. If you think the game will garner attention and you can use it on your resume, then release it for free. These kinds of decisions should be explored to their fullest as they both have lasting impacts. We are getting close to finishing Wanderlust and are debating whether to sell it or release it free. Just remember that it's always easier to lower the price than it is to raise it. If you sell the game for 5$ and no one is buying then release it for free and create some extra content to appease those that paid. Or, you can release a "lite" version for the people who don't want to pay and the full version for a fee. This is why the shareware market was so strong in the 90s before the advent of digital content.Last edited by marcus; 08-05-2009, 10:11 PM.

The trouble is, you can't quantify talent.Originally posted by Toaster View PostWith the trend in technology and gaming to constantly push the envelope in terms of what's graphically possible, and then you have a game like Cave Story--which is ****ing amazing and was made by one person--you have to wonder if developers have been chasing down the right rabbit hole.

Re: Rev Rants: Donate
Passage was cute at best. I liked Today I Die all right.
As an actor, I can help but equate video games to theatre.
I've always considered artsy freeware games to be like street performances. You can enjoy them at your leisure and, unlike "high-class" theatre, you're not obliged to abide by any etiquette to do so, or even pay a cent. Every street performer knows this. Even good ones can't get by on the pocket change of passersby.
There is no pocket change on the Internet - paying people online on a whim is not an easy decision for a lot of people.
Yeah, it'd be great if every artist was rewarded based on their talent. I'm sure a lot of us here would be doing very well.
But Today I Die isn't going to stop Assassin's Creed from being produced any more than a thrilling spoke-word poet is going to stop retarded Broadway behemoths like The Phantom of the Opera from being produced.
Every medium has amateur products and big-budget blockbuster products alike. This guy's acting like it's all the same thing. Does money really work like that? Does the world?
And, man, I wasn't a big fan of Assassin's Creed, but this guy's spite makes him sound crazy.
"The brilliant artist and saint Daniel Benmergui is forced to feed his family bread and chicken bones while Assassin's Creed gets a sequel, drives up the price of antibiotics and criminalizes abortion!"

Re: Rev Rants: Donate
Some of his stuff is interesting, but i think he gets some things wrong on a fundamental level that makes it harder for me to agree with the rest of his opinions.
Although i do agree with alot of the stuff he said in the last video (about fun).
Edit: Oh, and he can go frak himself when it comes to his comments about Assassins Creed. I loved the game, and thought it was fantastic and inventive, and i'm pretty sure was the first "parkour" game that came out. Yes there were some fundamental flaws that need to be addressed in the 2nd game, but it was a fantastic game that had too many so-so elements.
So Rev, frak you, and frak your hatred of Assassins Creed (sorry, been watching the new BSG series, and i'm really getting into it, maybe a little too much).Last edited by Jeroak Nelave; 08-07-2009, 12:26 PM.Vita, 3DS, PSP, PS3, PC, WiiU, Wii & 360
