    Transformers (the first one)

So I watched this for the first time tonight. I got it almost a year ago on HD-DVD, and as nobody was home tonight, decided to treat myself to some eye/ear candy. I did not want to necro the old topic, nor was it appropriate to post in the topic about the sequel, and I sure as hell was not going to peruse all 1000 (or whatever) posts in the original topic. So I'm posting my thoughts here.

First and foremost, I enjoyed it for what it was. Never having grown up with the cartoon/toys, I did not have nostalgia goggles on. And that really early scene with the one Transformer (I'm guessing its name might be Shockwave) sending out shockwaves and destroying all those vehicles was pretty impressive, as was that scorpion one early on. For being almost two and a half hours long, it flew right by, and I was entertained the entire time.

Problem is, during and after, I felt fairly well manipulated. First, there were WAY too many product placements. A closeup on a Panasonic SD card that lingered a BIT too long for it not to be obvious? A guy walking down the street carrying an Xbox 360 in the box with no bag or anything? And of all things, numerous shots of the GPX logo on the little boombox one? GPX???? Seriously???? GPX is like, low-end brand of low-end brands.

Second, I sorta didn't care for all the videogame rip-offs (you might want to call them homages, but come on...it's Michael Bay). The slow-mo bullet-time thing (yeah, it's videogame via The Matrix) and the wall-jumping that Optimus Prime did down that one building are the ones that immediately spring to mind. I'll grant you, they looked really cool, but my logical brain felt a bit insulted.

Third, the score blatantly ripped off both American Beauty and The Terminator in spots.

Fourth, a lot of the jokes insulted my intelligence. The little girl holding the

asking if the Transformer was the tooth fairy? The ma********on jokes went on a BIT too long, and the, "Wow, this is better than Armageddon!" line was too clever by half.

And the tug at the heartstrings stuff was a bit overwrought. Come on, he's had Bumblebee for like 3 days, and both Sam and we are supposed to feel some emotional attachment to it (him?) as the music swells? It just felt cheap and easy.

So overall, I did enjoy it, but cannot help feel a bit used and manipulated coming away from it.

I apologize in advance if these same points were brought up in the other thread, and that I'm not 100% familiar with the names of all the Transformers.

Why did Shia and the rest go to the city in the end? :V

Well, the lapses in logic for going from setpiece to setpiece were almost too obvious to even bring up. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief a bit on that. Within the context of the first viewing, everything just flowed from one highlight to another, which was fine, for the first viewing. Obviously, this would not hold up as well on further viewings. But again, for a movie that's already paced very briskly and clocks in at almost two and a half hours, I'm willing to look past that...you know, turn off my brain a BIT and enjoy the ride. Even after having done so, however, the above-mentioned were still sticking points for me.

A more basic question: could you tell who was who during the action? For me it was just chrome, everywhere.

I'll counter your basic question with an even more basic question: How did any of the humans besides Shia and the superficially gorgeous Megan know who were supposed to be the "good guys" and who were the "bad guys" when targeting them for airstrike in the city near the end?

And I'm sorry if this is part of the mythology or something that I just don't understand, or if I just missed something, but Optimus Prime tells Shia twice that he'd sacrifice himself, and that the cube needed to be inserted into his chest or whatever. But in the end, Shia raises the cube up, somehow it reacts with Megatron, and he "dies." I don't get that.

Also, Starscream was a jet...that part I got. But was Megatron a plane also? I kept seeing a plane fly around, and could not tell who was who.

God help you if you ever go outdoors. The shear color palette will blind you.

Megatron was the wierd looking Cybertronian jet.

            Starscream was a F22 Raptor

            And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road

Yeah...that's why I couldn't tell them apart. To me, a jet is a jet is a jet. They are machines with wings that fly. They looked the same to me.

Sorry, their colors weren't very easy to see when they were shape-shifting and tumbling about. And since I don't have 20+ years of knowing who these losers are, I don't really know any of their names besides Optimus Prime and Megatron. 8)

you cant tell a normal jet from a massive silver flying THING with no cockpit and ARMS?

                  thats not the movie's fault.

The only ones I can recognize are Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Ironhide. I don't know the names of anyone else.

Frist off, Perversion did you take notes when you watched it? Or thought about what you'd tell us. Because it seems like you did and if so wouldn't that just set the movie a little bit off?

I did not take notes, no. I had just finished watching right before I posted, so it was fresh in my mind.

IMO the best thing about the first movie was Sam's parents. The worst thing was every other human being in it. At least Sam was necessary to the plot and whoever Megan Fox played was eye candy, everybody else was just taking up space. But yeah it was just one big action sequence after another. It was okay. I'll see the second when it comes out on DVD.
I want that Mulan McNugget sauce, Morty!
