    Stained Glass pt. 2

    I made a new pattern.

And here's what I've done so far. It's basically all I've been doing in my free time for the last 3-4 days or so.

I think I'm getting better, and I'm learning a lot. For instance this morning I learned that tiny pieces of glass are almost impossible to grind, and that flux tastes really, really bad.

It feels really great to be producing art again after so long.

    That is really beautiful.

I love stained glass artwork. I've heard that it's a difficult process, and you need plenty of space.

Let us know how it goes.

      That's really cool.

I have no idea how the process works, but I like the results so far.

        Ωbright,

Awesome! I love how the actual glass pieces have a variety of tones within themselves. It's going to be a beautiful piece when it is done.

About ten years ago, my family went to visit a friend who worked with stained glass and had quite a nice workspace. Several of us worked together putting a precut arrangement of glass shards to form something like a snowflake. It really took quite a long time to do, and that's with pre-cut pieces. I can see why it would take a while with having to design, cut and then create the final product.

        A couple of questions.
The tree foliage looks black in the picture. Is that because light isn't shining through it? I mean, is it really a dark green piece like in the colored model?

The top piece of the walkway, the really tiny triangle, is that still going to be in the final product or is that too small to deal with? It looks super tiny.

Why did you choose to have one green piece in the walkway? Is that just to break up the white a bit?

Is this particular work based on a place you've been, or is it just something from your imagination?

Looking forward to following this thread.

Pretty sweet. There's always a market for stained glass, because of how difficult it is. Definately keep at it!
          ...and that's why.

That's just amazing! Now you've got me interested in trying this out for myself. I wonder if you could make a 'cube' shape, with each side made of a stained glass picture. Then you could put a candle inside.

Thank you And me too! I like the bold, linear-ness of it, with pretty much flat color in between. Even when I'm not working in glass my artwork has that feel to it quite often anyway, so doing it in glass had to happen eventually I guess.

It was sort of hard to get started, I mean it was kind of intimidating at first, but this is my 7th glass project. If you're patient you can get the hang of it.

As far as space, this is my setup:

If I wanted to do something bigger than about 12"x15" I'd need more space, but since I'm only doing small things right now it's fine. The grinder and soldering iron are on the left, the big, flat thing laying right on the counter is the glass cutting surface, and the box in the middle is to elevate the soldering board because I'm a behemoth.

And yes, the whole thing is sitting on the kitchen counter.

Thank you! I used green marbled glass for the grassy parts, and I tried to use pieces that would accentuate the light and shadow. What's funny is that after all that effort, you really can't tell a difference when you shine a light through it. They all look the same.

It does take some time to finish a project from idea to finished piece, but it's rewarding, and I'm finding that there are little tricks here and there to speed things up, plus you just get faster at things the more you do them.

Here is what it looks like (so far) with a light behind it:

So yes, the trees are made of dark green textured glass. The transparent colors really don't show up well at all without being backlit. Oh and I just finished the mountains. Now it's all sky from here on out.

Hah! You caught that. Yup, I decided not to even try to cut that tiny piece, and instead chose a bit of marbled gray that had a darker tip where that small piece would have been. Good spot. I also eliminated that top division on the horizon. This pattern was originally supposed to be about 15"x15", but because of my printer it had to be about 7.5"x7.5". There was just no way I was going to try to reproduce the larger pattern completely.

It's there to represent grass growing up through broken paving stones. I was trying to convey ancient ruins with very few visual elements, so some things might not come across well.

Nah, I'm just an ancient ruins fanatic. This place is loosely based on a lot of ruins that I've seen, but none in particular.

It takes a while to do, and it takes practice, but it's really not all that hard! I'm not really worried about draining the market though. I would charge at least $50 for the piece I'm working on now, and I think that's fair considering the time it takes to do it. Even if people knew that they could make it themselves (which they could), most people would still pay that not to have to.

Thanks to you too, and you should try it! See if there are any places offering classes near you. It's a little on the expensive side to get started because of the cost of the glass, tools, grinder, etc., but your tools should last a long time.

I was thinking the same exact thing tonight, actually. And yes, you can make any number of boxes and polyhedrons with glass. I was thinking of trying a lamp, but I've made a simple candle holder before that just used 5 purple squares to form an open cube.
