    PS3-60GB - Power Supply

So my PS3 bought it Saturday... Apparently the power supply died and it's a known issue with the 60s (probably the 20s too since they use the same part), although how widespread it is is up for debate. Note that this isn't an overheating problem, the temp was fine and there were none of the warning indicators of high heat before the thing shut down and refused to boot up again.

I just post this as a heads-up because I know there are other 60-owners here, the 40GB and 80GB models have a different power supply. It might be worth swapping out for the newer part as it doesn't seem to have any known issues with it, and your warranty is probably expired by now anyway. Check your receipt. From what I hear, occasionally the power supply will fry the motherboard too. Right now I don't have much choice but to send my console into Sony and pray that it can be fixed rather than replaced.

    Edit: Sony charges a flat $150 fee to fix/replace any out-of-warranty PS3s.

Ok, I own a 40, and I'm going to get a 60 today since I can get a good deal on it (Okay, more like a ****ing steal. 200 for the system and killzone 2, a game I wanted). I already need a new controller anyway since I threw a tantrum back in february after playing street fighter 4 and broke my original sixaxis. So with the game and controller cost I'd be buying anyway, plus the 100 I'd ask for for the 40 gig, I'm pretty much breaking even on this. So this power supply what is it? I can open the system and swap out my 40 gig's one for the 60 gigs? Will the case still be intact? Will the 40 gig work with the 60's supply so I can still sell it?

Should I just forget about the 60 gig? :s

60 gig PS3 are only gonna get harder to find as time goes on, especially if the Slims start selling decently, and people come to find out about the superior capabilities of the 60 gig. As I had said, I bought mine from Sam's Club as an open item for $200. I worked fine for about a month an a half. Didn't play it for almost a month, and when I went to turn it back on, I got the so-called YLOD. That might have been because I was using a replacement power cord, though, now that I read that it's probably a problem with the power supply.

So here's the thing. I still have the receipt from Sam's Club. It was purchased within the last three months. Technically, Sony warranties it for one year from date of purchase. So I'm wondering if I'm actually covered.

Well, it worked out okay. I got my system back and functional. I've been using it for a couple weeks without any problems (not that there were hints of problems beforehand). My data was wiped and the OS was reinstalled so I lost all my saves, not a big deal to me except for about 50hrs of Persona 4 lost. I dunno what it is with me and that series. I can't finish a damn game.

As for swapping the power supply, I don't know what all it entails as I didn't do it myself. Certainly if you're under warranty, I'm not suggesting you violate it by cracking open your system. Fair warning that if you've attempted to do work on your console yourself, Sony won't even attempt to repair/replace it for you, even for their $150 fee. Proceed at your own risk, I guess.

If I had to make a decision about whether to crack an unwarrantied system to swap the power supply, when it's not giving me any problems, or not, I'd say be conservative and leave it alone. But if you're tech-savvy (I'm not) and swapping a power supply doesn't sound like a big deal to you, it might be worth considering.

EDIT: As for the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death), I never got that, but I've heard of it. My thing went down like this: My sister was playing a PS2 game and the system crashed as if someone had just jerked the power cord. I turned it on, red light lit up, when I tried to get the OS to come up (as opposed to being in power-saver mode), the green light flickered and it went back to red. That happened about three times before my console stopped getting power completely. I don't know if the YLOD is a different symptom to the same problem or what. Accounts differ on the Sony forum.
