Your question is too expansive for me to answer - but the key to editing the default battle system is using traits - which in my opinion you are going to need to master if you want to make a fun combat system.
Think of the default battle system as just an outline for you to build on. It's not meant to just copy, it's just there to give you a solid ground to build on.
I want to help, but you are going to have to ask things in a more specific way. But from what i read about your game already it involves elemental based dragons - so you are going to want to go to game/game settings/custom and change your Prop M (Magic Properties) to the elements of your dragons. Then on your Party Member Editor go to Custom/ Resist M (magic resistance) and you can increase your dragon's resistance to the proper element there, making them strong to their innate element.
That's really all i know about your desired combat system so far so that's all i can say for now.
I agree with Jeremy. The DBS is a lovable, customizable, deep system akin to the classic Dragon Quest or best-selling Pokemon. You most likely don't like it because of Fuma. Fuma showcases the DBS like if a car salesman showcases all the dings and annoyances of a car. Sure those may be problems, but it is still a nice car. Er, battle system. A typical CBS, even a very good one, is not as deep and does not look as good as the DBS. So just experiment with it for a while, you'll grow to like it.
