Halp meh get more ramz inside mah computor, yup

So I keep adding more stuff to my computer over time to keep it up to date with all them new fangled gadgets and just kinda learn things as I go along. Added a bigger HD, put in an 8800GT video card, got a bigger case, added another fan, put in a better power supply. So now Im looking at Ram and all the fun things that come with it!

Ive got 2 stick right now that are 1GB each. I have no clue if they are DDR2 or whatever any of that stuff means. This is my first time messing with Ram. I know theres different Ram speeds, sizes, shapes, brands, etc. Id like to get 2 more GB so I can have 4GB total. Ive been told you shouldnt mix ram that has different speeds. I dunno.

Would it be better to get 2 more 1GB sticks, or just one 2GB stick? Ive got 2 empty slots left, but Ive been told that certain motherboards max out at certain amounts of Ram and things like that. That'll probably be the next thing I look into down the line after upgrading my ram.

Pic is the cheapo korean sticks that came in my PC when I got it. Can you guys tell me what kind it is so i can look at more like it, or anythign like that? Is there a certain brand thats "faster", or one thats cheap but works great?

All I know is that you need a 64 bit OS to utilize more than 4 gbs or ram. I have 4, but for some reason it only shows up as 3.4.

That looks like a DDR type. They're fairly cheap if you go to
      newegg.com or tigerdirect.com.

And Chrono is right, you need a 64-Bit OS to see all your RAM.
Otherwise you'll only see a max of 3 (.whatever).

Certain boards will max out, but since you say it still has 2
more slot, I would be safe to assume you can load up to 4 GB if you
      get 2 more 1GB sticks.

I'm not should if getting 1 2GB stick would be better.
I would stick with getting 1 1GB sticks.

Print out that screenshot and bring it to a computer specialty store to see if they can help you out? {:3

Computer store geeks will take advantage of you not knowing things and try to dump stuff on you that you dont need, and get frustrated explaining things. But your advice was th only real advice so thanks for that I guess!

That's not always the case. You can force 32-bit operating systems to see more than 4GB of RAM with a physical address extension. That's not very practical though, as you'd still be limited to 2GB of RAM per application regardless. 64-bit operating systems can natively overcome the 2GB of RAM per app limit and the 4GB address space limitation.

The reason why your RAM only shows up as 3.4GB is due to that address space limitation. Without PAE, 32-bit operating systems can only recognize a 4GB address space, but the address space includes all of your hardware not just your RAM. For example, all of the devices that have onboard RAM must fit within that address space so it lowers the total amount of RAM available to the OS.

The one good thing I'll say about Vista is that you do not need to re-purchase the OS to go from 32-bit to 64-bit. Windows XP x64 Edition is better though, but unfortunately Microsoft wasn't as generous with it.
