Let's talk about the new Metroid game that's not Metroid.

Now he's got one close to completion, a spiritual successor to Super Metroid that runs on Unreal graphics technology. He describes it as a game of exploration punctuated by combat. It's a mostly side-scrolling game of military bases, robots, forests and caves, rich in earth tones and energized by explosions and energy blasts. , 120 power-ups — many of them hidden — and a bunch of core power upgrades. A flashlight reveals which boulders can be obliterated only once the hero has missiles, which hatches need a different gadget. A distant corner can only be grabbed once the player's earned a grappling hook.
It probably won't be nearly as good as an actual Metroid title, but damn, this game makes me want to own a 360 because it at least looks and sounds like an actual Metroid game which is more than I can say from my impressions of Other M.

If I want something that's practically Super Metroid, why wouldn't I just play... Super Metroid? Or Super Metroid 2? }:3

Also, does the game reeeeeeeeally have to be three times the size of Super Metroid, just because it can be? How are you gonna remember where to go back?

I think you can make a Metroid-esque game that's not confusing without having the backgrounds color coded for your convenience.

whether they'll accomplish that, though, will be seen.

I'm not sure I should be taking that kind of talk from someone who likes to work in monochrome. :3

Grey, brown and using lots of bloom is the future of gaming.
