    FFCC: MLaaDL

My Life as a Dark Lord trailer on Squeenix's Japanese site.

I know a LOT of people hated MLaaK, but I enjoyed it, and this looks promising as well. Kinda like a Dungeon Maker-style game, but more cutesy and (seemingly) less tedious. It's coming out in Japan at the end of the month, and here sometime in the future.

This actually looks like a good WiiWare title.
    ...and that's why.

What are they making fictional autobiography games now?

I know this belongs in another topic in another forum, but....

        *readies rebuttals*

Confession: This late in my gaming career, I actually prefer to play the Crystal Chronicles games over the games in the main series. Well, it's not like I've really even PLAYED that many FF games, anyway, but all the offshoot projects (FFT, FFTA, and the FFCC games) interest me more than the "real" FF games.

In fact, I'm looking forward to the game this topic is about more than FFXIII. Ever since FFXIII was announced, up until now, even after having seen the cinemas and gameplay, I'm really meh about it. I'll probably pick it up like I did with FFXII, when it drops to $20. In fact, FFXII must have stiffed so bad that Gamestop still had some limited editions left when it dropped to the $20 price point, and that's what I picked up.

I just have a feeling that FF XIII is going to be one of those games that is completely different than what the trailers show it out to be. Same for FF versus XIII too.

I'm sure that has nothing to do with the snobby allure of being able to look down your nose at the main series games and preferring the spin-offs.

              Re: FFCC: MLaaDL

I loved MLaaK up until the point where my Adventurers completely refused to carry out my behests. They would take too long and return early which led to 15 second adventures. I just gave up after awhile.

Looking forward to Dark Lord, though.

                @ Mora:

Actually, no. It has more to do with the fact that I do not have 140+ hours to invest in a game where I'm pretty much forced to play it at a regular pace in order to remember what's going on.

The FFCC game that came out on the DS/Wii recently is pick up and play, where you do NOT need to remember huge amounts of storyline. Same with FFTA/FFTA2. Yeah, there's a storyline, but nothing you're gonna miss or have to restart the game for if you set it down for months at a time. To me, the FFCC and FFTA games (yeah, I know FFT DOES have a pretty intricate story in its newly translated version) are mainly about grinding and stat-building. MLaaK allows you to build your kingdom while the parties/characters grind themselves. FFTA, to me, was all about unlocking new abilities and character classes/jobs. And the short time I spent with Echoes of Time seemed that it was more about grinding/character building than storyline.

See, I can spend a good portion of hours at a time grinding and making different builds of characters, and thoroughly enjoy it, because I can also spend 20-40 minutes on the bus doing the same thing and feel fully satisfied.

Knowing a game with an actual REAL storyline is a 60-100+ hour timesink, it seems that I'm not allowed to play at my own pace, lest I forget what's going on. If I drop the same 3-4 hours or 20-40 minutes in a game like FFXII, I'm not gonna leave satisfied, because it really never seems like I'm making any real progress.

Hence why this late in my gaming career, Etrian Odyssey and games of that ilk are what I tend to find the most enjoyable.

You're making me want to head over to ebay and pick up a gamecube and a copy of FFCrystal Chronicles...I never really understood why Square thought it was a good idea to try an FF game out on a nintendo platform.

                      Re: FFCC: MLaaDL

Well, duh. You're unemployed, and can spend as much or as little time playing teh vidya as you want.

And salamander, that's kinda a bad idea. I have the game (got it on closeout from work a long time ago...have not played it, as usual), and I've heard that as a solo experience, it's not all that great. As a multiplayer experience, it's supposed to be pretty fun, aside from the fact that everyone needs a GBA and a GC/GBA link cable (I think), and that one person needs to hold some certain item (an egg or something...I forget exactly what) to the exclusion of doing anything else in the game. Yeah, you can hand it back and forth, but one person is always gonna be stuck doing pretty much nothing.

I will say that even if not all the games in the FFCC subseries are top-tier, high-quality endeavours, I do give Squeenix props for not being afraid to take chances, even if most of the time, the results are mixed. The ONLY reason I bought FFXII is precisely BECAUSE they took a main numbered game, and radically departed from the standard FF formula. And because the guy that made FFT was in charge (until he got yanked...stress/fatigue/whatever my ass).

I personally choose to support a game that tries to do something different, even if it makes a few missteps along the way, moreso than a prettier version of the same thing we've all seen a million times, albeit with minor tweaks here and there.

This is of course my major impetus in supporting the PS3. In the editor's column in the new issue of Game Informer, he compares all three consoles (mostly discussing their negatives), but does state that "no other first-party publisher goes out on a limb like Sony does to make innovative software."

So, yeah. Again, at this point in my gaming career, I'm willing to support games and companies that try something different and are trying to innovate. I really do not feel the need to indulge in "more of the same," and that goes for pretty much the entirety of the numbered FF series, aside from I and XII (XI does not count).

I feel sorry for your patients (clients, whatever) when you get a job...assuming you do in this winter economic climate.

Also, how do you go to grad school full time if the major portion of every day is spent signed in here?

Hi, Duel here. Just dropping by.

So glad I don't have to put up with all this FF jumbo. Seems like a curse and a blessing, or something.

                              Alrighty, Duel out.
