U.S. Doctor's Asociation Calls for Moratorium on GMO Foods

    http://www.financialsense.com/editor...2009/0521.html

    ...

The AAEM chairperson, Dr Amy Dean notes that ‘Multiple animal studies have shown that GM foods cause damage to various organ systems in the body. With this mounting evidence, it is imperative to have a moratorium on GM foods for the safety of our patients' and the public's health.’ The President of the AAEM, Dr Jennifer Armstrong stressed that ‘Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions. The most common foods in North America which are consumed that are GMO are corn, soy, canola, and cottonseed oil.’ The AAEM's position paper on Genetically Modified foods can be found at http:aaemonline.org.

    ...

The AAEM paper further states, ‘several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signalling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system.’
They add, ‘There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation as defined by Hill's Criteria in the areas of strength of association, consistency, specificity, biological gradient, and biological plausibility. The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies.’

As far as I am aware, the first GMO ingredient to be used in the U.S. was Monsanto's recombinant bovine growth hormone. Companies that had dairy products advertising themselves as being free of this hormone were sued by Monsanto; Monsanto won and in most areas of the U.S., dairy products not containing rBGH can not be advertised as such. The effects of rGHB are similar to consuming steroids, only they show themselves much more slowly over a longer period of time, and are correllated with obesity, various cancers(since the use of rGHB in the U.S. in 1994, lymphatic cancer rates have increase 50-fold in males aged 35-55), organ damage, and allergic reactions.

The film Soylent Green was quite prophetic in its prediction of one corporation controlling the majority of the world's food supply. That being said, most of what you buy at a grocery store has unlabelled GMO ingredients, so as to prevent consumers from having a choice to avoid them. Over the long term, the damages that GMO food is doing to people seem at least as bad as smoking cigarettes, although possibly much worse.

This is a pretty big deal, I'm slightly dissappointed it hasn't garnered mroe attention.

While I believe it, I still think they need to elaborate on "Several Animal studies". Making such a grandoise claim, while omitting important details makes the claim dubious.

Also, there is a study available elsewhere in which humans in Britain were fed GMO soy-burgers and shakes, and bacteria within their gut were confirmed to have randomly absorbed genes or fragments from genes inserted into these food products.

Transformation is a natural process of bacterial evolution, I'm sure they're taking the study a further step to see if GMO-induced genetic changes in Rumen/Digestive bacteria is more common(Or Dangerous) then standard.

If all of these studies are verified, we're in for a **** storm.

                  ...

Members of the French government stated on September 19, 2012 that they asked the National Agency for Health Safety (ANSES) to investigate the findings of the study which linked cancer in rats to genetically modified corn.

The most exciting aspect of this is that, according to a joint statement issued by Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll, Ecology Minister Delphine Batho and Health and Social Affairs Minister Marisol Touraine, it could very well lead to a suspension of the use of GM corn in the European Union.

Meanwhile, in the United States, an amendment blocked the ability for states to demand the labeling of GMOs and Monsanto actually threatened to sue the entire state of Vermont for pursuing GMO labeling initiatives.

                  ...
That study is titled "Longterm toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize" and can be found at the following link:

Re: U.S. Doctor's Asociation Calls for Moratorium on GMO Foods

The FDA has approved GMO salmon for human consumption without GMO salmon ever having been tested on humans, will allow this salmon to go into the market unlabelled, and a vast majority of Americans would like to be able to avoid it but will have to avoid salmon altogether to now do so. This is no surprise given that the FDA is being run by those who have worked in the biotech industry and who are likely to return to the industry and reap even more profits.

                    http://www.naturalnews.com/038501_GM...n_FDA_GMO.html

Once the bastion of purity, seafood has now entered the realm of "manufactured" sustenance, thanks to a couple of U.S. government bureaucracies.

                    ...

A couple years ago Sir John Beddington, Britain's current chief scientist, warned there would be a "perfect storm" of a swelling global population combined with climate change and food shortages, making it "very hard to see how it would be remotely sensible to justify not using new technologies such as GM."

Those "warnings" have become typical of GM proponents - scare tactics aimed at forcing acceptance of a "science" that enriches the companies managing it at the expense of the people they are allegedly trying to serve.

Opponents of GM fish have it right: They argue that introducing such fast-growing salmon creates unacceptable risks to human health and the environment; they also know that permitting genetically modified fish to be produced will likely lead to more GM animal production, which could eventually destroy entire food chains.

Before issuing its decision, the FDA had already said the salmon was fit for human consumption, but in a draft environmental assessment published recently but written in May, the agency went a step further, "declaring that the production of the GM fish is unlikely to have any detrimental impact on the wider environment," the paper said.

Opponents disagree. Dubbing the GM salmon "Frankenfish," they warn that the modified species could at some point escape into the wild then interbreed with wild fish, thereby undermining the genetics of certain species, especially the endangered Atlantic salmon, known as the "king of fishes" grown on fish farms in the UK.

If they ever get released in the right location, they could potentially render real salmon extinct.

There's been proposals to release other, unapproved GMO animals into the wild, such as modified Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Key West, Florida.

Not a good idea at all. But our government is bought in part by the biotech industry, and it will make sure that the industry gets to make its money, damned be the consequences. It behaves that way to most any other industry anyhow.

The reason why they make GMO foods is to make food cheaper.

The poorest Americans already spend 25% of their income on food. Many still go hungry, to say nothing of the millions starving in poor countries.

The problem with that purpose is that without government subsidy, GMO foods wouldn't be "cheaper". The amount of pesticides and fertilizers necessary to raise GMO crops has been the cause of many third world bankruptcies and subsequent suicides(India's cotton farmers being a notable example).

These organisms are patented, and when a farmers' land is contaminated with GMO seeds/pollen, his future crops have also become GMO and the farmer is sued by Monsanto(or others) for growing their organism without permission, and the farmer is sued and loses his land during the resulting legal battles.

In Iraq, U.S. soldiers have repeatedly seized land from people who grew heirloom seeds, as Monsanto managed to get laws in place there to compel the use of their product by farmers.

Family farms in the United States are damned near extinct, rendering our food supply more controlled by the biotech corps, who are producing this heavily subsidized, but cheaper "food" and placing it into our store shelves without labeling and even after harmful effects have been confirmed in lab animals. Given a choice, laboratory animals will literally avoid GMO and eat the non GMO food if it is offered.

The biotech giants insist the products are safe, while they have simultaneously refused to release their initial studies and trials, and have instead handed us heavily redacted documents of questionable scientific rigor, only to have the FDA rubber stamp their products for approval without any public debate whatsoever. This FDA has people from the biotech industry on its payroll and running it.
