    Scientifically Interesting (project finished 6-17)

...I'm going to today in order to motivate myself to do something worthwhile during my time off from work for the next two days.

I just updated the firmware on my second 60 gig PS3 and downloaded EyeCreate. Problem on the other PS3 is that they only allow 200 video clips/still frame captures, etc, and I'd need to do some judicious pruning in order to make enough room for capturing/editing. So I'm using my new one instead. A blank slate, if you will.

I'd captured live to DVD some of an audio book of Heart of Darkness, overlayed with some video from a piece of software from the original Xbox (it's not a game, actually, and apparently is quite rare) called Xbox Music Mixer. There's a program within that that ostensibly allows live mixing of music if you're throwing a party or something, and has live video mixing on top of it with a ton of effects and abstract images. I'm using previously-captured video from that with the Heart of Darkness audio, and an audio reading of Heart of Darkness read by a computerized voice (from a text-to-speech program) that I found online, and intended for the vision impaired.

I'm gonna use the Playstation Eye camera, the EyeCreate software, my Sony XBR 32" monitor, my sampler, this mixing board I have (intended for mixing music from 2 ipods together for parties and such, with effects and whatnot...as usual, I'm gonna use a piece of equipment for something nowhere near what it's intended to be used for), and the previously-existing DVD captures I made. I'm also thinking about using some music I made with that Korg DS program as the background, and ATTEMPT to sync the video clips with the audio. Last time I undertook a project like this, it took 7-8 hours to edit down a 2 and a half minute clip. I'm trying to do something a BIT (read: a LOT) more advanced this time, so we'll see what happens.

I just feel motivated to do something creative for once, and I'll hopefully be updating this thread throughout the night as to my progress.

Re: I never post in here, but...(video project on 6-13)

I love the idea of live video mixing, and I was never sure if it was actually a thing.

    Yeah! Do editing.

    I wanna do editing.

Yeah...this is a LOT more complex than I thought. Ever since my first post, all I've been able to do is capture 2 and a half minutes of audio from the song I made on the Korg program for the DS.

If I had everything set up before hand, with all the cables I needed already connected, it would have made the process go a lot more smoothly. This is the part I hate. Every time I do a project like this, I end up tearing apart and reconnecting my home theater setup (to an extent), as I do not have a dedicated work area already set up.

I REALLY REALLY badly need an A/V patch bay incorporated into my setup. It would make projects like this a HELL of a lot easier.

Meh. Getting ready to capture some video, but I need to do a bunch of stuff with the audio (the Heart of Darkness stuff) to make it interesting.

I also can't wait to experience this madness.

          **** it up, perv.

Meh. Spent WAY too much time after my last post redoing the audio portion of the thing. As of now, I have a 4 and a half minute piece I'm happy with. I was trying to input the song directly into the PS3 via a USB microphone adapter I got with Singstar, but because the adapter is amplified through the PS3 (microphones are not at line level), I kept having problems with a bunch of distortion. I ended up doing it the old school way (running the audio through my 32" Sony's speakers, and then capturing it via the microphone on the Playstation Eye camera (it's a really decent mic, actually)).

It actually turned out okay, because the audio sounds a bit more spacious, but the bass is reduced, unfortunately.

I captured a few pieces of video after I got the audio I was satisfied with last night, and went to sleep at about a quarter to 5 in the morning. I've been working on this on and off since I woke up at noon today. Got a ton more video captured so I have a lot of raw material to choose from. The song is now edited with corresponding video to about the 45 second mark. I think this will start going more quickly now that I have all the raw materials I need.

Well, it's not going as quickly as I envisioned. I'm taking a break right now, and I'm at about 2 minutes, 20 seconds. I think the song is more like 4:45, so I'm about halfway done.

The reason it's taking so long is because I'm taking 3-7 second sections of the song and putting a corresponding piece of video to go with them. I'm either syncing it to a rhythm, an effect in the song (filter sweep, stuttery delay, etc) so for the most part, each piece of video (chopped into, again, 3-7 second chunks, is there for a reason.

This project is still going, but very slowly. I'm in a rhythm now...each "meaure" of the song is broken up into 10 second, 20 frame segments, and each loop within that is 2 seconds, 20 frames. So right now, I'm breaking it down that way. I've got about 50 seconds left. Hopefully this'll be done by Thursday.

Re: Scientifically Interesting (project finished 6-17)

'Tis done. I'm not ready to post this on Youtube yet, for the simple fact that apparently Youtube does not like Mpeg 4 format, and I REALLY do not want this to look like garbage when I upload it.

As I watched for the first time in its entirety blown up on my 65" TV, I realized it's kinda an odd thing. The rhythm is pretty repetitive, and almost was a bit trance-inducing. But the visuals are all over the place...choppy, quick, spastic. A strange feeling came over me as I watched...it's like I was zoning out, but being bombarded by sensory overload. Weird juxtaposition.

The name of the thing is Scientifically Interesting, and I do manage to poke some fun at myself regarding the possible pretentiousness of the piece right at the end. All in all, I think it turned out well.

I wanna see. If you can't Youtube it quite yet, perhaps something else is in order? Rapidshare, or what-not?

You could also try uploading to megavideo.

Just a bit leery of putting it on Rapidshare or MegaUpload or some such, as there's no identifying information that I made it, and I don't want someone downloading and passing it off as his own.

If I reinstall my program for transcoding video, transcode it to AVI or another format and the quality holds up, then I'll upload to Youtube. Obright told me before that for whatever reason, Youtube does not handle Mpeg 4s very well, as evidenced by all the other videos I've uploaded. To be honest, they look like ass.

                              Meh. We'll see.
