A team of scientists and engineers got together at Berkley U and began researching consumer products: where they come from, what they're made of, how they're manufactured, and how willing the company is to disclose information about its product. Using this data they developed a rating system to let the average person see how well products compare to each other, and also view all the details that they might be interested in knowing about, like whether certain toys or personal care products contain carcinogens.
http://www.goodguide.com is the site that they came up with. It's in beta, and not everything is available for review, but looking through it you'd be surprised by what gets high and low markings.
I was listening to the founder of this site speak in an interview, and it's interesting how much products have changed in mere months by disclosing information to consumers in this way. It seems business really does cave to consumer demand. Give it a look.
