Looking to get a video camera...

But I have no clue where to start. I am looking for one in the 100 to 200 dollar range.

Anyone have any suggestions on certain types, or brands to look for? I want it for showing off places I am going to visit to keep a record for myself. And maybe do something to put on youtube.

I always loved cameras/camcorders from Sony.

For a camera, the DSC-T70 is nice. Go through everything with a touch screen. Battery life seems pretty good. Although truthfully I havent figured out how to take decent pictures when it's dark out. 8.1 MP, and can take really clear pictures that show up great on an HD TV. For videos, the highest setting is 640 Fine. Little blurry on an HDTV, but still looks and sounds good. That one was around $300 when I bought it, so I dunno if it went down lately. Uses a memory stick duo, and even has its own internal memory.

Also, it's pretty small, so it fits nicely in pockets.

I think am going to have to increase the budget to around $300. I want to do some editing as well. I'll have to take a look at that camera you mention.

I don't really have any recommendations for that price range except for DV cameras.

If you're looking for something for shooting dedicated video (meaning, a camcorder as opposed to a digital camera), your $300 is BARELY gonna cut it.

I'd say stay away from MiniDV/MiniDVD camcorders. If you were willing to go up to $400, there's a nice 60 gig HDD Sony camcorder with 60x optical zoom for about that price range. Other than that, I'd say get one with either internal flash memory and/or expandable via SD/microSD/Memory Stick. You can get one in standard def for the $250-$300 price range. There's a Sony one called a Webby (I think) that runs about $200. It's only got 5x optical zoom, but it's small and compact with (I think) 4 or maybe 8 gigs flash memory, and is expandable via Memory Stick. Some of the other brands that use flash memory/SD cards are also in your price range, if you're only shooting in standard def.

I've heard okay things about the Flip Mino camcorders. They're relatively inexpensive and VERY small (barely bigger than a digital camera), but have a tiny LCD screen, non-existent zoom, and only 2 gigs flash memory, and are not expandable. There's a built-in flip out USB connection, though, so you can plug it right into a PC like a flash drive without having to have a USB to mini USB cable. There's pluses and minuses to everything.

Double post due to Vonwert's rep request...

This one has the 60 gig HDD.

This one shoots high def video, has a 5.0 megapixel still camera (REALLY REALLY good for a camcorder), and is only $200. I was mistaken, though. It does not have any onboard memory that I can see. You are limited by how big of a Memory Stick you are using.

If you are gonna shoot tons and tons of standard def video, the first one might be a better choice. If you wanna shoot in high def, take good-looking (for a camcorder) still pictures, and don't mind shelling out for an 8 gig (or bigger) Memory Stick, the second one might be a better option.

Oh, and I just linked to my work's website because it was easier for me to find those camcorders there. If you wanna check Amazon or whatever, just copy the model numbers.

Yeah, unfortunately $300 is sort of chump change in the camcorder world. :s

Well I bought the DCRSR47 and really happy with my purchase. Got it in the blue color

I plan on getting one of those octopus type camera stands that allow you to wrap it around stuff.

Congrats. Of all the HDD camcorders I sell at my work, this is the one I sell the most of. It good quality, fairly fully featured, and relatively inexpensive.
