The return of "I just blew..." (I have PS3 questions, guys!)

    But this time, it's real.

I just scored a 60 gig PS3 (out of the box, no cables/cords/etc), from Sam's Club, of all places, for $220. That's where I bought my original 60 gig PS3 6 months after it went out of production for $550. On a whim, I went there to see if they still had one left. The girl checked the system, and it said they had one. We looked in their lockup, and there were two 80 gigs in the box, one Uncharted bundle, and an open one sitting in the back that I did not initially see. She said, "There's an open one, but you probably don't want that one." I told her, "Actually, that probably IS the one I want." I checked, and sure enough, it was the 60 gig. As it was open, and probably sitting there for almost a year, it was $220.

I can go on ebay right now, and probably at least triple, if not quadruple my money. Or I can be a nice friend to my buddy who's been looking for one for a while, and sell it to him at a reasonable price. Or I can keep it as a backup in case mine craps out.

First, though, I need to go home and make sure that it even works.

I always giggle when someone tells me they blew a ******. This elicited a very similar response.

Well, the title of the topic was in reference to my ORIGINAL "I just blew $586.14 (or some amount that approximates that)" topic that I made when I bought my first 60 gig PS3, and which left a spate of cheap knock-off and parody topics in its wake.

We of course would know that. But where's the fun in not rehashing a joke?

For the time being, I'm gonna keep it. I just tested it a bit ago, and it turned on and worked. Have yet to try a game in it, but the PS2 version of Rock Band was still in it. Put my Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon SACD in, and it recognized it, which tells me it is indeed a 60 gig. Manufacture date is March 2007.

Few questions, though. I checked the system info, and it said that there was 64 gigs available out of 74 gigs. This really confused me. That would make it seem as if it was an 80 gig. But I'm pretty sure the 80 gigs were not being manufactured in early 2007, nor are they capable of playing an SACD. And who in their right mind would remove an internal 60 gig HDD and replace it with an 80 gig one?

Also, the firmware is version 1.80. Would there be any reason NOT to upgrade it to current? I'm possibly thinking about setting them both up so if my buddy comes over, we can both play some games, each on a different system and on our own monitors, probably via PSN because I'm pretty sure you either cannot set up a LAN network, or there are no games compatible with one.

And as a major bonus, setting this up just MIGHT alleviate a good number of reasons I had to get an HDMI splitter.

Only downside I see thus far is when it was loading the SACD, it was significantly louder than my "real" PS3.

the loudness may be why it was there, maybe the person returned it. And yeah, there was not an 80gig system available in early 2007, so most likely the person did put in an 80gig hard drive, which doesnt make sense, but not everyone does.
