I recently found out that PSO Blue Burst had extra content in it that the GameCube version did not. Basically "Episode 4." After finding out, I did a little bit of research.
Apparantly SEGA shut down all the PSO servers, and there's a website (not linking yet) that hosts private servers. They've only hosted games that SEGA stopped hosting, and when you google "Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst" it's the FIRST damn link.
Is this illegal? I mean... it's free, a private server, it's common knowledge and isn't even remotely underground or trying to hide itself, and even has "hack" in the name. But I don't want to discuss it on the boards here unless it's legit. Valk? Mods? Anyone? You guys know if this is safe or not?

discuss and link all you want.
I will say that I've tried getting the damn thing to work, but it never connects. also, the fan-run website gives me malware warnings every time I view it.

I've been able to connect to that server through Blue Burst.
Can't with GC PSO cause I don't have the Broadband Adapter.
I've also never gotten Malware warnings from that site.
Might be a False Positive?

we've known about this for a long time. Dream and I would play a lot, sometimes with Denmo. Magus and Mora played with us once too.

Valk, since you said the site was weird for you, here's what I did to get it to work:
1: Go to C:\Program Files\Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (or whereever you have it installed)
2: Right click the "Settings" and click properties
3: Change the "Start in" and "Target." On default install, mine was something like "C:\Program Files\PsoBBHack" or something like that. I changed the PsoBBHack or whatever it was to Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst.
After doing that, the Settings icon should change from the default little white windows exe box, to the same icon as the rest of the stuff. Anytime you run the game you have to run it through THIS shortcut or it won't work.
Sorry if that's basic advice that failed for you. But it didn't work for me either until I changed this. Hopefully this fixes it for you.
Been playing yesterday and today. Level 24 HUmar with a level 40 something Rudra.

People who connect on a gamecube or dreamcast ver. 2 connect to a different server from each other as well as the one pc players play on.
I've still got my guys, a ranger around level 70 or so and I think I had a force around the level you are on.

My buddy has the (really rare and expensive) broadband adapter for the GC. He bought it specifically to play PSO. Someone dropped a hacked monomate once online. He picked it up, and his entire memory card was corrupted. He never played again.
I have both versions for the DC and the Xbox version. Not sure if I'm even able to go online with it on my original Xbox and connect to a fan server, though. All I know is, the game has not aged well. I've tried to play PSO a few times fairly recently, mostly to test out my video scaler, and before being scaled, it looked like total ass. After scaling, it looked passable, but nowhere near the 3D quality (and I know it's a 3D game...that's not what I mean by 3D...I mean the graphics back in the day on a standard def TV just had so much depth and dimension to them) that I remember.
And on top of that, it's PAINFULLY slow-paced. I mean, bordering on not fun anymore slow paced.
I recently purchased Sacred 2 for the PS3, and have already dropped 60 hours into it. This game is/will be to the current gen/my PS3 as PSO was to my Dreamcast/Xbox.

I have a 6 year old computer and it runs fine at top speed.
I like the game because it's something I can relax to. Quick pick up and play with friends kinda thing.
If anyone wants to play and I happen to be on AIM, just give me a shout out.

I usually hang out on Altas 2-13.
I'd really recommend Blue Burst over GC/Xbox. For GC you gotta set your connection information to their servers, and you've gotta send them your serial number for the game... but it's still GC. Meaning if you've got 10 weapons on you, and a bunch of meseta.... and your power goes out or you FSOD, you lose it ALL. Anyone remember that? You'd be left with nothing but your current equipment if your game froze. Forget the other rares you had, or that level 182 MAG you were trying to raise while you were fighting with your level 200 one..
I've had Blue Burst freeze twice on me, and didn't lose squat. All the stuff is saved server side, so they don't punish you for quitting without saving (GC) to stop duping.

Why would you recommend playing the version that freezes up all the time over the pc version? }:3

No no, Blue Burst IS the PC version that I'm referring to. I didn't mean to sound like any of these freeze, I meant penalties.
The GC version would save EVERYTIME you accessed your bank or de-equiped an item. The reason for this is, being saved client side, they were trying to stop duping. You dropped an item and just turning your GameCube off. So if you got a random FSOD or power out, you were screwed out of anything you were carrying that wasn't nailed down.
PSOBB is saved server side. Doesn't matter. FSOD, power outage, PC explodes, whatever. Your stuff is safe.

Just a note, from what I remember, this private server does prune
accounts that are not active for more than 3 months.
My account is probably gone by now. :lol

Personally, this is why I hate MMORPG's. The game could be the best game in the world, but companies aren't going to keep the servers around forever, and some day they are going to shut them down and you won't be able to play anymore. I would hate to get attached to a game and then never be allowed to play it again. For that reason I think it should be fine for people to make their own servers, they are keeping the game alive for people that are fond of it.
