I don't know how much more of this I can take. I saved right outside of the first village and put the game down. The game gives you the option to skip cutscenes (which I have been using gratuitiously) which are all painfully voiced in English. The game starts out with the main character who wakes up early because he's SO EXCITED to do something on the eastern hill. For about 3 minutes you get some very well written dialogue exchanges about how unlike it is for the Hero to wake up early. Minutes later, the hero spurts out one of the best lines of dialogue that I have ever heard in an RPG all while never stopping to take a breath:
"Can't know how something's gonna turn out until ya try. That's the whole point of tryin'!" <--- ACTUAL QUOTE FROM THE GAME.
"THERE HE GOES AGAIN."
"THATS WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU KID."
A young spunky 15 year old boy that is an orphan and was found and taken in by elder Rajim. After going to a nearby area with Marica, liu, Jale and Dirk, a forest appears and no one except him knows that the forest was never there before; everyone else thinks the forest was always there. They decide to go in the forest and they find a strange book that gives the hero, Jale and Marica powers. To their dismay Liu and Dirk do not get any powers, but Marica and Jale realize that there wasn't a forest before. Eventually the hero finds out about The Order, a group that believes everything is predetermined and forces people to do what they want. The hero decides to stop The Order. It is implied in the game that the hero came from another world as a baby, but that world was subsequently destroyed by the One King. The castles the hero makes his base in and the clothes he wears in the later half of the game are implied to have once belonged to his father. The hero's starting weapon is a Cudgel.
They also removed everything in the game that makes it remotely like Suikoden at all. For instance, instead of fighting a self-contained conflict like the Suikodens of past, you're out to save the world. Instead of each character having a specialized weapon that you can sharpen which added to their personality/individuality, they can equip pretty much whatever they want. The graphics are ugly, and not reminiscent of its origins. Is this supposed to be a series reboot or a giant "**** you" to the few that actually cared about the series to begin with?
This... this is not good. Should I press on just to see how bad it gets? Or if it possibly redeems itself? I feel like I'm playing a bad anime. I've never been put off by an RPG this much in my entire life.
