    WHAT IS THIS?

So I finally got the interbutt hooked up in my new place. Thing is the guy had to exchange out my modem for a new one since it wont work in this area. He gave me a new one, but he jammed this huge "thing" onto the back of it that feels like itll break right off. It connects right where the cable connects to the router, and I have no idea what the **** it does. The internet seems to work fine without it.

Any of you buttheads know what it is? Any of you have one too? Im getting my internet through Shaw.

It looks exactly like these things the cable company have that decode signals. This one time I was friends with the cable guy, and he gave us one for HBO, and one for cinemax. We never had to pay for those channels again.

I think the_jester is right. I did some searchin' and found some stuff talking about high-pass filters, and looked them up.

A filter that blocks low frequencies and allows higher frequencies to pass through. Such filters are used in devices such as POTS splitters that direct phone and DSL signals to different lines.
So it might be one of those, or the opposite, a low-pass filter. People sometimes sell them as "Digital cable de-scramblers" to scam other people.
