    Re: Sherlock Holmes

Holmes getting into sexually awkward predicaments?

    Watson busting down doors?

General cheek not in any sense contained within the actual Holmes stories?

Seems a far cry from the detective whom we all know and love. I'm gonna watch it anyway, of course.

Does Watson give off the "I've got a secret crush on Holmes" vibe to anyone else..?

I wonder if they are going to mention that Holmes does crack... and pot...

Or that Holmes was never very exciting.

Holmes was an interesting character, if never actually exciting.

And the whole "playing instruments at 3 in the morning" line makes me believe it will at least heavily hint at his cocaine tendencies.

              Re: Sherlock Holmes

My only problem with the Sherlock Holmes stories is that critical information is kept from the reader to prevent even the slightest chance of them being able to solve the mystery on their own. The whole point of mystery novels is to pit your intellect against that of the protagonist.

Please don't let this be Robert Downey's Van Hellsing...

                  Re: Sherlock Holmes

They were the original mystery stories that influenced the entire genre into existence, and no, that wasn't their intent. It was to show you just how gdamned clever Holmes was compared to everyone else. Watson would see the obvious information and draw the obvious conclusions, the layman of the duo, but Holmes would see all these particular details and nuances and keep to himself until he could "unmask" the mystery, so to speak.

Just because that's the realm of the contemporary mystery story doesn't mean that the thing everyone copied until it became its own entrenched genre should be snubbed for not conforming. =3

Looks kinda goofy. Could be charming?

Though we've already had 5 seasons worth of Sherlock Holmes movies.

If I wanted someone to make me feel like an idiot I'd tell Mora that I liked the Dragonball movie, not go read a detective novel.

And you can't snub it for not conforming when there wasn't anything to conform to, now can you? But I can snub it for not being entertaining. I gained nothing from reading those stories. A good mystery/detective story exercises my mind as I contemplate the problem. Doyle leaves you with half-clues and whole lies. The reader gives up on even trying to figure it out on their own after the first five cases because they are impossible to decipher.

                        Re: Sherlock Holmes

Maybe you shouldn't say the stories bother you because they don't read like normal mysteries, then. =3 Because that's NOT. THE. POINT. of Holmes stories. If you didn't find them entertaining, then so be it. It just sounds like you're approaching this from an angle of a preconceived notion of a mystery story, which is total bunk when approaching Holmes stories. Don't read them as "mystery stories" because yeah, then you'll be disappointed. I'm only saying maybe it's not the story that's the problem, but the way you perceive what it should be accomplishing when it's obviously not that way.

I found them to be delightful character studies of an individual so intelligent that he had a hard time connecting with other people on any level. I enjoyed seeing the end result of his musings regardless of the fact that I couldn't pit my intellect against his and solve the mysteries on my own. But I might be speaking more from the perspective of someone who likes to see well-crafted characters and aspires to do the same in my own stories. Not sure on that. But the Holmes stories were immensely satisfying and entertaining for me as a reader.

it's true, modern mysteries are much better at realizing their audience is comprised mostly of morons who like to feel good about themselves. originality and, you know, good writing be damned
