The CWS4 Planning Topic - Rick's Prologue Opener Idea Thinger is Posted

I've been tooling around with the idea that I'd like to start another collaborative effort with people here, but if we do this, there are going to be significant changes from the way the previous Creative Writing Stories were conducted.

First of all, there wouldn't be just one or two people masterminding the beginning. Anybody who wanted to commit to the project has to be involved from the outset, in creating the main characters and focusing on what plot elements are going to be important. Some fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants stuff will be okay and decisions will largely be up to you when it's your turn to write, but the major decisions of plot/character/setting/etc. have to be talked out in advance. Hopefully this will avoid some of the major drama and problems we had in the CWS3 and, from what I hear, the CWS2 that had its ill-fated end far too early.

The other thing is, it won't be open to just anybody. I want a core group of people who feel they can dedicate time to this project, on a regular basis, kinda like a club of sorts where once a week or so we gather together, discuss the story and where certain things are going, talk about issues with it. I want this to be fun while at the same time being a serious collaborative effort on the part of contributors. For a while in the CWS3 we were having a blast talking about things and planning stuff out and writing and posting, but it took so long to get to that point and it wasn't without drama because of some of the writers. And the additions/chapters/episodes became so long that people couldn't comfortably write them in any decent amount of time because of outside life stuff like work and school, so people ended up dropping out and I finished the story myself, which wasn't nearly as fun as doing it as a group. =(

Mora gave me some good advice to this effect on how to collaborate successfully among different writers:

And also have a convention between the writers every so often, to keep people on the same page. If you aren't on the same page, you'll have people pulling the story in a million unsustainable directions.
I think that about sums up what I was getting at. Thanks, Mora. <3

So now that I've basically taken the spirit of the Creative Writing Story and turned it into a job, would anybody be interested? XD I think having this thread open for a few days or a week or so to get a general consensus would be great, and having at least two or three other people that wanted to seriously contribute would be awesome. More than that's welcome, too.

    So. Here we are.

Hahaha, Rick's so bored he's willing to do another CWS.

But seriously, I'd be willing to contribute. Lord knows I can't kick myself into gear and actually write something for myself.

      =P

The actuality of the situation is that I've been unproductive since December, basically, and I feel a stirring need to be doing something. And the most fun I've ever had writing was for the CWS3.

Whoever finds this idea intriguing, PM me so I can keep track of everybody, and give me IM names if I don't have them already so we can start talking about stuff. =3

I really hope this gets off the ground.

I'd probably enjoy making an attempt at this.

I will absolutely join in on the condition that everyone critiques the hell out of me. I don't want to write big long things if I don't get anything out of it at the end.

It has been a while since I've completed an actual written story, but I would love to get back into the groove of things.

Re: Anyone interested in doing CWS4?

Ok, so here's what we need to do to start off with.

Everyone needs to think about what genre they'd like to write. The general consensus thus far is "fantasy" but since that's a broad term I'd like everyone to try and nail down what they mean by fantasy. Think about sentient races other than human you'd like, if at all; level of technology (which also includes the kind of terminology people would use, most definitely involved in medical practice and scientific explanation); thematic elements and the main characters; just things in general you'd like to see or write about.

We need to tack down a good time to get together over IM chats or somat and discuss things as a group, but we can worry about that when we know who all is gonna try and be part of this.

I'd say that, by Sunday, if you haven't said yes to the idea, we're gonna move ahead and try to start planning stuff out as a group.

I'd like to contribute, but I'm not sure if my writing level is really up to par!

Don't worry; Rick edits the hell out of everything at the end, anyways. :3

So are we only going to be coming up with genre, theme, whatever over IM or will we also being doing that in here. More likely it is both, but I'd rather be sure.

Feel free to do some out loud thinking in here, as it were.

As for me, I'd like to write something with more of a steampunk feel to it, but not so s-punk that we're writing it just to be writing s-punk. I'm also wanting a non-teen male protagonist, early-to-mid twenties, who's not the "chosen one" and a strong female protagonist, who also is not the "chosen one." We did kind of a workaround to have our cake and eat it, too, with the CWS3, but in the end, we still had the chosen one, if in jest only. =3

But these are just my starting ideas, and we'll of course decide as a group what everyone would like and what could mesh well together given style and theme. Compromises will happen, so just be prepared to have some of your ideas shot down.

Can the main protagonist be a male in his mid seventies?

He feels like he's in his early-to-mid twenties, though.

Are you suggesting we do Benjamin Button?

Or like, he's of a race of people that is incredibly long-lived, but is only by their reckoning the age or mind-level of a human in his early-to-mid twenties.

Cause if you want an old guy protagonist who LOOKS old, then I'm not interested. =P
