View Full Version : One hell of a PS3 RPG

Here's something I've been contemplating. The PS3 is already a graphically powerful console. A Blu-Ray disc has massive space on it alone. IAnd some RPGs go for 3 or 4 discs to create epic RPGs with large graphical power. So here's a thought that'll probably never be attempted:
Make an JRPG for the PS3 that uses 4 Blu-Ray discs. The number of pixels for characters alone would be incredible. The entire game could be so realistic, you'd crap your pants.
Then again, A game that big would take at least 10 years to complete, and by then the PS3 would (probably) be outdated anyway.
What do you guys think?

I think it is a horrible idea and you should feel ashamed that you even brought it up.

I think the next generation of consoles will take 10 years to make a good game (except Nintendo's).
And on a side note, the next good looking JRPG for PS3 is White Knight Chronicles!

why a JRPG?
and why would you ever expect a JRPG to be realistic.
the number of pixels for characters? sounds like you don't understand the technology.
why would a game that big take 10 years to complete? MGS4 fills an entire blu ray disc and can be beaten in around 4 hours if you hurry.

The reason earlier games were so huge is because Japan has a hard on for uncompressed full motion video but now most in-game engines have reached the technical prowess that was once only possible through FMV's. Metal Gear Solid 4 is so huge because nothing is compressed and there's like a billion textures for each object. Polygon count (which is what you're thinking of) is based on engine power, not the size of the disc itself.
Anyways, multiple disc games aren't efficient at all and the largest games are usually on one disc (like Oblivion). As far as the genre, nobody really cares about the traditional turn based JRPG's anymore because they were boring and dumb. The big companies mix in more action oriented sequences or player interaction and only the smaller companies still produce ATTACK, DEFEND, CURE run from point A to point B rpg games. The future of the "traditional" RPG is on the handhelds. We're seeing a slow but steady increase in handheld RPG's and it'll probably become more commonplace over the next 5 years.
EDIT: Nobody cared about RPG's even during the height of their popularity. Aside from Final Fantasy, only a small handful even touched 300k copies. RPG's were plentiful in the 90s because they were cheap to develop (early PC RPG's all used variations of the same engine). Now that they're expensive as crap, companies don't develop them as often.
If I had my own company I'd be devoted to making 2D RPG's but I'd probably go out of business after the 2nd game because I believe in stuffing my boxes with fluff material. Maps, full color thick manuals, props from the game like coins and stuff, and music cd's.

I want a video game with the visuals of Metal gear solid 4 but you can only kill guys by jumping on their heads.

It's called real life.

Eventually videogames will reach virtual reality state . Once that happens, will the big companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo keep striving to make newer more powerful systems than their last? When a game simulates reality almost perfectly, how do you improve graphics...?

No game will ever be that way because it would be prohibitively expensive to develop. Just look at the predicament they got themselves into in this generation with development costs!

Eventually middle-ware will take over actual development and end up making the entire game in the press of a button.

Maybe instead of making newer and more powerful systems , they'll start to upgrade existing ones in different ways. Example: like the DS and PSP

I think it'll the stay in same as far as advancement goes but this generation has proven that games are following a Hollywood format.
Basically, you have the big money companies pumping out flashy mainstream games while the smaller studios release more niche titles with lower production values but more features that appeal to a smaller number of people. I bet few of you have ever heard of Battlefront or Spiderweb Software who've been making realistic war games and traditional RPG's respectively with great success for the past ten years. Like the independent film world they've grasped a small but lucrative market and I for one can't complain about their success.
