OMG!!11! I actually started to watch one of my animes!!

Yes...instead of sitting on the shelf taking up space, I decided to remove the shrink wrap from Paranoia Agent and begin watching it.

Got through disc one so far, and aside from one episode being almost a carbon copy of Perfect Blue, I'm REALLY liking it so far. It's totally my style.

This again confirms in my mind that Satoshi Kon is my favorite anime director/writer.

Not that I'm THAT familiar with the Japanese culture, but so far, it seems to be a fairly profound comment on the state of society today (both in Japan and universally).

Gonna pop disc two in as soon as I post this.

PA's theme song is my favorite ever.

The series really gets wild near the end. Enjoy!

Yeah, I figured you'd like it. But Satoshi Kon is getting really good at doing the same thing over and over again. I think Millenium Actress is where he peaked.

        Yeah...I can see that.

I only got through about the first half hour of Paprika when I got it on Blu-Ray. I SERIOUSLY hope that movie does not turn into another Blade Runner (meaning, every time I try to watch it, I fall asleep).

Paprika's amazing, and you should feel bad for saying that.
          ...and that's why.

Paprika's all right, but it has a big knock against it for making no sense.

Paranoia Agent is a pretty good choice. Things get pretty crazy, but everything is pieced together at the end. Though some isn't straight up told to you.

                    Psychological thrillers FTW.

Just finished the second disc. The other thing that stands out is his use of sound and the hallucinatory visuals. And I'm guessing this is an artistic choice, but I'm also liking more and more how the backgrounds and inanimate objects sometimes look almost photo-realistic at times, and yet the characters always seem to be fairly crudely drawn. I don't mean that in a bad way, but how a lot of them have very exaggerated features, and all are not drawn with smooth, graceful lines, but instead are a bit rough around the edges.

Kinda brings to mind the "perfection" of the characters' surroundings, cold and sleek, permanent and unchanging, whereas the characters are softer, more vulnerable and more malleable.

I noticed this first in my most recent viewing of Perfect Blue. The guy I was watching it with commented about how "ugly" the characters looked compared to most anime now, and how the backgrounds looked different than the characters. I chalked it up at the time to the age of it, but now can see that it is most definitely a stylistic choice.

                    God, I'm loving this.

Boogiepop Phantom is really confusing if you just watch the anime, since you are only getting half the story. Luckily the manga is avaible so you can know what happen in the beginning.

It's confusing, but possible to unravel. It's a little TOO straight-forward if you have the whole story.
