Bootleg DS game(s) at Game Crazy

I was returning "No More Heroes" and checking out the used DS game section.

I noticed they had a used copy of "The World Ends With You." I picked up the box and it seemed "off" to me. The cover graphics were kinda fuzzy, not clean and sharp like they should be. The inside booklet was also weird, and contained what appeared to be a preview of the game's controls. It was also printed cheaply. The real kicker was the post-it note on the inside of the box that said "UPC rings up as Mario 64 DS." Holy crap guys, how could you put this out for sale???

I never thought I'd see bootlegs being sold as legit copies. If you're picking up used DS games, be careful. They aren't limited to ebay and amazon anymore.

The Game Crazy employees were probably not that oblivious when the game was traded in. The clerk that traded in the game could have been meek and too afraid to raise any objections if a shady character brought it. It could have also been a jackass manager that would rather raise the stores margins by taking the trade in (despite knowing it would be returned or defected later), because the consequences for not meeting company expectations are greater than an upset customer when they can plead ignorance for the trade later. It may have just been pure apathy on the minimum wage employee's behalf as well.

In any case, I am actually not at all surprised to find bootlegs in retail chains. I would just recommend being that annoying customer that asks to inspect the game before making a purchase.

I can understand not noticing it's a bootleg by just looking at it. But seriously, if it rings up with the wrong UPC, that's a huge red flag. Even if that doesn't clue them in that it's a bootleg, it definitely tells them something's very wrong. They ignored all that and placed it on the shelf for some poor jerk to buy.

Here's a link that talks about the fakes.

How do you know it's a bootleg? Was it just the box that was suspect? What did the cartridge look like?

          • The box looked fake-y.
          • Post-it note inside the game that stated "rings up as Super Mario 64 - DS".
          • No way she could tell what the cart looked like because GameCrazy (as well as other used game stores) do not put the games inside of the cases until the sale is made.

Alot of game stores sell bootleg game cases with real cartridges. Gamestop (at least around here) makes their own boxes. It's nothing new.

they dont photocopy the case insert, and create a new manual though. or say that the game rings up as a different game because the piraters copied and pasted a random game UPC code when they did their insert.

You are correct, but I still would need to see the cartridge to be sure. I create cases for my own games that didn't have one when I bought them used.

or we can just accept that bootleg DS games like this with crappy inserts and manuals are documented to exist, and game crazy was stupid and took one in a trade.

I bought Spyro from Game Crazy once. Turns out the disc they gave me was a demo. I pretty much firgured it was since it said on the disc "Not for resale" or whatever, but I took it anyway.

The manager (maybe second-in-command) was ****** that someone actually bought it for resale.

                    Everyone makes mistakes!

                    Don't copy that floppy!

I'll keep an open mind, either scenario is possible. (Though the bootleg theory is more plausible).

In a similar note, at the local flea market, they sell N64 shaped controllers that hook up to your TV and have a bunch of NES ROM's on them for $20. Bastards.

I went back by this store on my way to get food. It turns out the game catridge looks just as bad as the box/manual. Bootleg all the way.
