    Shmups

I wanna know what vertical/horizontal shoot-'em-up games you like, Pav.

    Cuz I don't think I like any.

    =(

Unless Space Invaders Extreme counts. And I still gotta try Big Bang Mini.

Raiden, Gradius, Solar Striker for Gameboy, and there are several on SNES that were good.
    ...and that's why.

Maybe you just don't like them. And that's okay!! I don't like FPS!

Axelay on the SNES was pretty awesome, and I don't really like shmups a lot either.

Not a big fan of the genre myself, probably because I suck at most I've tried.

I DO like Ikaruga quite a bit, though, even WITH its punishing difficulty level. It's just so...different than your standard shmup. Like, instead of just dodgin' and shootin', you need some sort of on-the-fly strategy, which adds some depth.

I also semi-recently played one for the Wii called Castle of Shimigami III, which is a vertically-scrolling (ala Ikaruga/old arcade shmups) shooter, but instead of ships, you control an actual person, and have many choices of character, each with different "super shot." It was pretty fun, considering I really do not like shmups, for the most part. But as a warning for Glooms, it's pretty weeaboo.

I also like Defender for the Atari 2600.

My favorites that fit into vertical/horizontal type are DonDonPachi, Einhander, and R-Type.

If you don't like any of those, I'd recommend Astro-Boy Omega Factor, since it's fairly forgiving and alternates between a beat-em-up and a shmup as well as having a lot of unlockable powerups so even if you suck its beatable.

I'd also recommend Bangai-O since it's a shmup where instead of being confined to scrolling you can move around freely in any direction, and it plays very differently than most games in the genre - it rewards rushing headfirst into everything you come across, as you fire more missles depending how many weapons are currently being fired at you.

Not sure if Space Invaders Extreme "counts," but that doesn't mean it's not a good game. Also, Big Bang Mini is also a lot of fun, but kinda sorta resembles something like Geometry Wars more than a shmup, even though it's pretty much nothing like a dual stick shooter. But that would be the best comparison to make.

I have Bangai-O Spirits, but have yet to insert it into my DS. I also have a PSP game I got from my work on closeout for like $2 or something called Platypus that's like a claymation side-scrolling shooter. Again, I've yet to play it, but it's supposed to be pretty decent.

OK, I tried Astro Boy and Bangai-O before but what on EURF is DonDonPachi and aren't there a buncha different R-Types? Which ones (for which systems) do you dig?

                  Re: Shmups

DoDonPachi is a Jap only arcade SHMUP. Not my favorite, but really well made. The name is apparently the sound of gunfire in Japanese onomatopoeia.

Aside from the ones already mentioned, I really liked Shock Troopers 2 and Total Carnage on the SNES. Macross Scrambled Valkyrie on the SNES is godly.

DoDonPachi is the sequel to the original bullet hell game, which is basically just a shmup where you have to avoid even more crap than usual. Getting it (legally) is probably difficult but yeah, this is the internet.

As for R-Type I would recommend 1 (ton of things this is on; pretty sure it's on virtual console too) and 3 (SNES)

                        Gradius V

                        Ikaruga

... and I hear R-Type Final is pretty great but I've yet to ever play an R-Type game. I just might have to pick it up considering that I can snag a copy off eBay for about 10 bucks. :3

I'll admit that Gradius V is pretty damn hard, and that I still haven't beat it. It's a really well made game, but what can you expect when you have a game developed by Treasure whose musical score is composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto? Being someone who doesn't really like the genre though, I think that Ikaruga would be the best place for you to start seeming as it's widely received as the best of its kind and you can get hold of it rather easily (X-Box Live).

ugh if you can beat a shmup with both hands on a separate controller it's time to get a life!
