Perv and marcus discuss Etrian Odyssey

Toastie can join in too, but I'm pretty sure nobody else here has played these games.

So, why is it that I got EO II, played the hell out of it, and then later got the first EO, which, by most opinions, is not quite as polished and streamlined as the second game, but I find myself not going back to EO II after I began playing the first one?

Aslo, do you have an ideal combination of character types? Most of the FAQs I've read tend to focus on having a "main" 5 character party, and having some Survivalists in reserve to serve no other purpose than gathering/mining/chopping. I tend to make at least one character of each type (sometimes 2 if I'm focusing on a different skill set or weapon type...ie: one Landsknecht with a sword focus and one with an axe focus; one Survivalist with a gathering/tracking focus and one with a combat focus, etc...although I have two medics because I almost always have one in my party, and do not want the one to be over levelled), all female, of course, and switch them in and out on excursions to the forest. I play this the same way I played FFTA, meaning, I try to have as many characters of different types so I can experience all the game has to offer, and so I can get my micro-manage on.

Other than the game possibly being less of a time sink, is there any reason I would only want to focus on five main characters?

Is this the DS game where you can map your progress on the other screen? While I'm not a big fan of handhelds, the concept intrigues me.

I use two protectors, a survivalist, medic, and alchemist. I never found landsknecht to be necessary. Once you get the Ronin, the Landsknecht is pretty much outclassed.

Late game the medic can learn a skill called Caduceus which deals excellent damage with a chance to stun. Combine this with maxed out TP up and a troubadour's recovery and your spellcasters will never have to worry about TP.

Yes. I want to say that you should think real hard before purchasing it because it's an unforgiving dungeon crawler with lots of grinding involved. The only reason I like it is because it's well designed and brings back fond memories of little marcus playing Wizardry on his dad's C64.

I'm also excited for Class of Heroes and The Dark Spire. Already preordered them.

Dunno exactly WHY this game is so addicting to me. I guess because I do not spend a lot of time playing games at home any more, and this game is perfectly suited for the DS, meaning, no long involved story to try to remember if you set the game down for a while, you can actually feel like you accomplished something after only 45 minutes of grinding, and I guess because the first game I ever played that heavily involved grinding (before I even knew what grinding was) was the original FF on the NES, and the first game I ever played that heavily involved micromanagement and character customization was Ogre Battle, and the EO series, to me, takes the things I liked best about those two games, increases the difficulty exponentially, and puts them in a tidy little DS package.

As much as I love SRPGs, lately, the battles seem to take too long for the time I have available to me. Again, I can play EO for half an hour or for three hours, and always feel like I accomplished something.

And you never answered my question, marcus...is there a reason I should only focus on building up 5 characters as opposed to having one or more of each type, and experimenting with different builds? Or is it pretty much just player preference?

EDIT: I have the same two games on preorder as well. Imagine that!

Player preference. All of the classes pretty much balance out by the time you get the hexer and ronin. As long as you don't have an off balanced group, you'll be fine. There are people who solo the game and they have my utmost respect.

I had a separate team of survivalists for money making purposes but having one of each class going down separate branches isn't necessary.

Oh, hey. I got midway through the 2nd St... raduim? Geez, it's been so long since I've played this game. Can't wait for the DSi to come out so I can finally play this game again (old DS went kaput).

I was using a Warrior, Alchemist, Medic, Protector, and... Survivalist combo. Was working pretty well. Boring, but effective.

From what I remember of the game it was a nice challenge, but I can't help shake the feeling that the experience rang somewhat hollow with me. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed how you had to map out your progress and the overall atmosphere of the game, but there didn't feel like there was much else to do in the game other than ride the level up treadmill to the top. What can you really expect from a dungeon hack, though?

I don't mind dungeon crawlers. Grinding is only a problem when the game is put together poorly. If the grinding feels worthwhile, then it's ok. And I like Wizardry, except that I have it for the NES.

However, I don't have a DS, and I'd hardly purchase one just for this game. It does however, sound like I game I'd consider adding to a DS library.

In an announcement that's sure to make Perversion flip out, I bought this game and am playing it.

The first one or the second one?

Also, first Demon's Souls, and now this?!?! What in god's name has gotten into you, John Mora?

EOIII has a 60 page art book that spans the entire series as a preorder bonus, and first pressing includes dual-sided poster/skill tree chart.

                      God, I love Atlus.

I'm having so much trouble in B5, at the first boss of the game. I'm level 18 and the Skolls that back up the boss just wear me down at the end.

I didn't notice a lack of marcus here.

                            but I love it
