A lot of it seems like common sense but is glossed over in professional game design. Lack of anticipation leads to cheap deaths (a problem with early arcade games). Lack of focus and pacing leads to boredom (a problem with many RPG's). When you look back at the classics like Super Mario Bros. 3 or Half-Life, you realize how closely they adhere to these principles.
