So... Im playing FFXII Again

Well, pretty much for the first time. I got it when it first came out and all, played it probably 5 or 6 hours, but then put it down never to pick it up.

Until now!

So Im playing, and I must say, I like it much better this time around. probably because I appreciate the free-roaming, old school RPG feel more. I think I was hung up on the story driven linear style of FFX the last time.

I must say though, Im loving this game so far. Just got to the Garamsythe Waterway with Balthier and Fran, so Im guessing Ive along way to go.

If this game can pass up FFX as my favorite RPG of all time, then it will have done a seemingly impossible task. LOL only time will tell.

My first time through the story felt threadbare, but that was because I was doing absolutely every sidequest available to me at the moment it was available to me. So then after leaving certain areas of the game for new areas, I could spend 4 or 5 hours, easy, before I'd move on and actually do the story stuff again.

I suggest doing sidequest stuff, because it makes the game more fun, but don't do ALL of it at once.

When you're 35 hours in and stop playing for almost two years, there is no going back to play it, nor investing all that time again.

I got this some time late 2007 and made it to the Airship and was badly defeated by the boss. Now whenever I restart that save I can't even make it to the boss since the guards keep ganging up on me. Is that a difficult segment or am I just "challenged"?

Ohh.. Yeah, it took me two or three tries to beat him. I can't remember how I did, but he definitely isn't easy.

I leveled quite a bit before then because it was pretty easy to level on the airship.

FFXII was such a joy for me to play through. I loved everything (except Vaan).

Agreed. I thought the game was too easy except the last boss, though. You could use quickinings to beat just about any story boss.

My thoughts playing FFXII

Hour 1: Awesome opening, kickass cinematics, Basch's beard is EPIC.

Hour 2: Okay... who's this half-naked with the carapace abs?

Hour 5: Alright I'm being introduced to generic dashing rogue and his bunny girl sidekick whose armor consists of a leather thong leotard.

Hour 7: Oh cool gonna bust out Beardy McEpicBeard from prison and WTF WHERE IS HIS BEARD!?!?! If this chick is the princess of the kingdom why is she wearing a ****ing mini mini mini skirt? You're a widow, have some self respect. Wait a minute... *** SPOILERS ***

Hour 9: HAHAHAHA I AM BASCH VON ROSENWHATEVER I'M GOING TO SCREAM THIS IN REAL LIFE

Hour 15: Is there a story to this game??? I'm just wandering aimlessly watching one semi-related cinema and I'm pretty sure nothing has happened.

Hour 20: Okay, fighting cool armored dude that I vaguely remember from the 2 cinemas he appears in JESUS CHRIST KICKING MY ASS DRAIN DRAIN DRAIN DRAIN DRAIN OH GOD

Hour 55: I just made it to the big city... I don't even remember if this game had a plot.

Hour 80: Main quest too hard, doing every hunt to level and ****'s still too hard.

Hour 100: This. Dungeon. Is. Too. Long.

Hour 110: Finally, the last area. Okay, beat that judge guy again and WTF! *** SPOILERS ***

I've encountered this guy three times since the beginning of the game and it's NOW being brought up? This was an element mentioned 100 hours ago and dropped for the entire game! This is garbage!!

Hour 111: Beat the game. Stupid ending. Put disc in case and case on shelf never to touch again.

Final Opinion: 100+ hours of nothing. Horrific pacing; story elements are heavy but overshadowed by miles of dungeon crawling. The game is designed like a single-player MMO that focuses on heavy grinding for better equipment. All of the techniks are pretty much useless and a waste of money. Gambits are a cool idea, kind of like macros, but reinforce the MMO idea and can lead to trouble if you use them too much. Quickenings are a dumb idea. This game is a disgrace to the Vanadiel I know in Final Fantasy Tactics. How dare they set this game, Tactics, and Vagrant Story in the same universe.

I think the story gets really slow and boring after everyone forms a group of 6. There's no dynamics with what you're doing after that, it's just one huge fetch quest.

Other than that, Marcus can suck it. FFXII is one of my favorites.
