    games ya love to hate

    Shinobi
    - for it's repeative gameplay, cheap deaths, and bleh level designs.

    Skies of Arcadia
    - great game in a way... coupled with a HORRIBLE battle system. I hated it, and only got as far and the... umm... Rixis Temple--I think

    Dragon Warrior VII
    - it's ok, just very painful and not all the rewarding. very long-winded too

    Shadow of Destiny
    - I actually liek this game a lot more than I have it, but the gameplay is so... blah.

    Legend of Dragoon
    - fun as hell at first, then it goes goes all downhill. liked the batte song though.

    Final Fantasy 2, 8, X-2
    - worst ones of the series, by a long shot.

    SMT: Nocturne
    - i'd liek this game more if it weren't so archiac... and punishing. horrible party/demon recruitment system. re-selecting when fusing gets old too...

    Space Channel
    - it's fun, but I feel embarassed to own it and play it, same with Katamari Damacy.

    Max Payne
    - really, play this game. compared to #2 it's crap, the controls are loose, crappy jump puzzles, and the storyline / everything Max says is just garbage. "The sky was dark, laden with foreboding" WTF?

I got more, but this is all off of the top of my head. List yours.

I'm with you on the punishing part. It's like Atlus was saying to itself, "We have an intense hatred for RPG players, but no way to express it artistically... Hey, I know! Let's make an RPG franchise based on idea of completely ****ing off the player!"

My LoD experience: When I got this game, it was a 3-day rental. I got to the beginning of the 4th disc before I had to take it back, was how much I was into it. Later on, after several weeks, I re-rented it, and played it maybe once. I just couldn't get back into it at all. So, I concur.

And Max Payne is okay, but God, those damn nightmares he has are just retarded jumping puzzles(though the sequence "You are in a graphic novel!"/"You are in a computer game!" was great). And his voice is just the worst kind of droning.

I'm too optimistic to hate any games in particular.

I stopped playing Legend of Dragoon about near the end of the first disk, because it was a tad boring. The dialogue at times, seemed pushed and not real. Plus the romance angle seemed faked.

While I really liked Digital Devil Saga, the same problems plague every game they have made in that series, including the Persona series.

Maze like dungeons, with random encounters every step. Annoying puzzles forcing you to go through the levels again.

Ghost House for the Master System.
I was good at this game. Too good. But you can never beat it! It just keeps going. BLEH! *punches lights*

Bart vs the Space Mutants for the NES.
It was the first Simpsons game on the NES, so you know I played the hell out of it... too bad it was horrid. The gameplay was frustrating, and I swear to god it looks like it was designed by the "boy and his blob" team. I only got to the last level ONCE, and died two screens in.

              Populous for SNES
I got this game new in the box in 2003 for $2.00. I love the ambient sounds/music, and some of the earlier levels are interesting, but after a while I get to the point where I have no idea how to advance.

              Side Pocket for the Genesis.
At first I hated this game. You can only choose between two gimpy players, both look like rejects. The game has some of the goofiest music, and it doesn't help that you hear it 500 times during two matches. If I am wasted enough, it's kind of fun. One time we got trashed and ended up playing it for about 2 hours while we talked about how much billiards suck.

ARC the lad collection for Playstation.
I attempted to play this a few times, but it bored me to tears. Has anyone else played this? Should I give it another try?

              FFX-2 for the PS2.
I never touched this piece of garbage, but I watched Dave play it and that was enough to make me loathe it. I wanted to cry when I saw how "GIRL POWER!" they made it. They turned the quiet, thoughtful Yuna into a slut with guns, and then threw in two more sluts and everybody dances! When I saw that they really did DANCE during battle, I was very very sad.
I felt dirty just for watching. And I'm very glad we rented it and didn't pay full price for this flash n' trash.

FFX-2 - Sure, the battle system is pretty good but what an embarrassing chore of a game. I kept playing to see.... Yuna fly off into the sunset in the end? Gee, thanks, I think I'll stick with FFX's mature, bittersweet ending rather than compromise decent storytelling for... whatever the hell Square was trying to do with the game. If it was camp, they really underachieved. Camp is Adam West doing the Batusi, not Yuna cruelly giving a boner to some cyberpunk then withholding sex while dancing in her underwear and whining in front of a Spira seemingly, and suddenly, populated by morons, spouting dialogue perhaps only slightly more inspired than the latest Inu Yasha episode but certainly as vapid. If it was wacky over-the-top fan service, then FFX-2 is the videogame equivalent of blue balls. They should've consulted RE: Cutie Honey. I mean, it begs the question: Is this the same software developer that made Vagrant Story? ...Still, the battle system was pretty good.

Kingdom Hearts - Amazingly, this game is only slightly less embarrassing than X-2 because of the charm of its classic characters and story. Though the writing gets really sloppy, it's the presentation, with a familiar and talented voiceover cast and extremely faithful graphics, that steals the show. But damn, if only it was good enough to completely dwarf the stupid and frustrating gameplay. Let's run around with awkward controls in terribly designed "forests" and "cities" tapping X until the cows come home! Hey, why would I want to easily see my surroundings and the enemy I'm wailing at when I can scope a permanent view of Sora's rectum! Thank you, camera! Gummi Ship... WHY?! Useless magic, summons and partners? WHY?! A sequel?! ...Engage Hesitant Optimism Mode!

I can't belive the tolerence people have for Legend of Dragoon. The dialog is just plain horrible. The characters are blocky messes. The story is the wost kind of cliche. The battle system is boring and tedius. The whole game makes me feel dirty.

Re: games ya love to hate

Here is a couple of mine:

Doom 64 - My god...the monsters look like paper cut outs. The game is pretty much the orginal doom, but boring. Plus the controls were sloppy.

Ephemeral Fantasia - Even before you play the game, you can tell from the impossible to pronounce title, that it will be crap. I actually thought the characters had some personality...but when the whole time looped....it went downhill.

From the random encounters every other step, to the huge freaking maps, that all look alike. And forcing you to find a certain location in a certain amount of time, where even when you are forced into a battle, the timer keeps ticking.

Evil Dead : Hail to the King - Ugh...what a way to kill the image of the movies. The only good thing about this whole game was the intro. After that, you are forced to fight enemies who don't die. Run through endless mazes, solve stupid fetch puzzles and fight hard as hell bosses, because you used up all your ammo on the immortal enemies.

I forced myself all the way through Legend of Dragoon. It's barely even worth it. The final boss battle is horribly done. You fight 3 forms and each form has - no, not a different brilliantly scored soundtrack for each - the same ****ing song, and it just starts over each time you fight the next form. The ending FMV sequence was spectacularly horrible.

While I enjoy FFX-2, it could've and should've been campier and sexier.

Re: games ya love to hate

Of all the games I've played, I hated none of them.

Besides, Skies of Arcadia (Legends) is one of my favorite games. The battle system is somewhat slow, but I like it, and I really like the battle music(s). Also, Vyse is the only main character in an RPG that I actually find cool.

Final Fantasy VIII is also one of my favorite games. I like the Junction system and Drawing spells from enemies. I like the GF system. I like the characters, but there is not much variety in character design, they are all normal looking teenagers.

Legend of Dragoon is...awesome. I pity you all...
I like various things about it. I like how every character is elemental, meaning they have weaknesses and resistances to other elementals. I like how every character has a Dragoon form, and they have different combos when they are Dragoons. I like the way Additions work. I like how there is 3 different battle songs for random enemies. I like how there are multiple boss songs. I, haven't played in a while, so I don't remember the story. Anyway, I like lots of things about it.
That said though, there are some things I rather dislike.
Mainly how Dart is soooo main character-ish. Not only is he a typical teenage male warrior guy with a broasword who is associated with fire (which is to me, the most annoying cliche of all), but he also gets more of everything. He has the most additions (which is ridiculous), has to lead the party, has to be in the party, gains levels the fastest, might have the most weapons, and he even gets a special bonus that I won't mention 'cause it's sorta spoiler-ish.

Regardless of Dart's main character-ness, I still really like the game. I wouldn't mind playing again sometime soon...

Normal? What normal teenager has his face half-covered in tattoos? Plus, they're all hot as ****. Normal teenagers are awkward and ugly.
