Re: Just saw Memento for the first time tonight...
I've never said this before, highwind, and I'll probably never need to say it again, but you're a fool. Memento DEMANDS to be seen multiple times. Seriously, you might THINK you know what happened, and how it happened, and exactly how the film was laid out, but until you watch it at least once (probably twice) more, I think it's almost impossible to fully grasp.
Unless, of course, you just didn't like it. Then you're still a fool.
Re: Just saw Memento for the first time tonight...
Memento is easily one of the best films that I've seen, and it ranks right up there with There Will Be Blood.
I'm going to have to agree with Perversion and say that it demands to be seen more than once. If not for walking into it knowing the bigger picture beforehand, but to notice the subtleties that you would have simply glazed over the first time and to fully appreciate Leonard's soliloquies. Memento is a very tightly designed film and there honestly isn't one element that if removed would serve to make the storyline more concise. Everything is there for a reason.

Obviously, I was not 100% serious in calling you a fool. I just don't understand how you can think it's "hacky."

Only thing in the film I've not come to grips with is the Polaroid where he's pointing to the spot on his chest, which later (earlier) has, "I've done it" tattooed there instead. That's the only part that makes no sense. I believe there was no Sammy Jenkis, and that Leonard's wife DID have diabetes, and that Teddy was telling the truth, and that Leonard at the end knew he was, but didn't want to accept it, so instead chose to off Teddy to help him not remember what he was told.

surprise surprise, chuck
The "I've Done It" image is not meant to be taken literally. He's got tattoos all over his body, his wife's still alive... it's some daydream/wish thing to hit home how completely ****ed Leonard's mind is. Only possible way that quick flash during his ending monologue can make any sense. He's conditioning himself.
I think the movie's an awesomely hopeless, bleak affair and I loved it.
