The Stories Behind Games (OR I Just Finished Playing Rule of Rose)

I just finished playing Rule of Rose (thirteen hours), and...well...the story just left me reeling. (As nerdy as it sounds.)

    (MAJOR spoiler below!)
    *** SPOILERS ***
Although, I was expecting Stray dog to be more like than bull-boss from Majora's Mask rather than Wilson hunched over...Still kick-ass though.
    *** END SPOILERS ***

Have any of you ever had an experience like that?

I'm kind of confused as to the point of this thread. I thought it was about the storylines or something like that in games, but there is nothing like that in this thread.

I've had a few, but I really wasn't impressed by the story behind Rule of the Rose. I actually don't have the stomach to play horror/thriller type games (Fatal Frame still haunts me to this day) so I ended up watching a play though of it. The story was intriguing, but it felt a bit forced and the ending was horribly bad for me. The ending was just-- I dunno..--EVEN MORE MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW.
      *** SPOILERS ***
just having it all be in her mind and the dog being dead--it just make me sad and depressed. It wasn't the kind of ending I was expecting. I'd rather see Brown alive and happy with her then for her to get over her internal issues. :P

But I think I get the just of what this thread is about- While playing KOTOR, the big secret in that actually took me by surprise (someone spoiled it for me) and one of the earliest games that shook me in an emotional way was Lufia and the ending on that. It was something I was somewhat expecting, but not to that degree. And there was a game I just recently found out was called "Exile" where a *** SPOILERS ***
      certain character ending up dying

after you went through the whole game on that specific quest.

But--I think that's kinda the point of this thread...right?

The climax of BioShock > everything else.

Everything else after the climax = mediocre

I just read the entire Neverhood Chronicles in one sitting.

Good god, TenNapel needs to make more games. For those that don't know, The Neverhood was an adventure game written/directed by Doug TenNapel (Earthworm Jim) where his primary goal was to recreate the Bible in his own vision. The plot is slowly revealed through animated discs but the CRUX of the game rests in the Hall of Records where the Neverhood Chronicles AKA THE GAME UNIVERSE BIBLE is etched on the wall.

See my screenshot? There are 38 of those. 40 if you count the entrance and last room which you HAVE TO travel through to grab a disc.

I'm surprised you had the stomach to play Rule of Rose, since it's unplayable.

Nigh unplayable, Mora. I manage to beat the game twice. Ya know because I was hoping there would be something worthwhile in new game+. Nope, there is nothing. Though, I discovered that my original interpretation was wrong. Amazing how such good music and storytelling can be ruined by the worst combat system known to man... and to monkeys.

I really want to play Rule of the Rose but after watching a video of the main character fighting a vomiting marionette and this old man groping some girl (and this creepy fat girl who just HAS TO BE A BOY) I don't know... I just don't know.

This game has that creep factor that attracts me but horrible controls can ruin ANY game for me.

Yeah, I hated the fighting controls too. Thank God the gun had auto-targeting, huh?

I actually felt sorry for Amanda (the fat girl).

But yeah, Clara was the hardest boss in the game, and at least you got to rough Hoffman up a bit.

The gun was about the most useless weapon in the game. You can't find ammo for it until you return to the orphanage and you only get one bullet at a time. So you can't really use it on the regular enemies and there is only one real boss left. So yep, useless.

Rule of Rose has awful controls. You start out being able to move as poorly as you would in other games when wounded, so when your character gets wounded... it's over. You're not outrunning or escaping anything.

It surprises me that you own and have played this game, Jamos. More than once, too. I thought you were Mr., "Anything that involves children, especially exploitation of said children, I get all worked up into a frenzy and make it known how much I want to personally castrate anyone who might do such things." And, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this game just a TAD exploitative? Granted, I own it (go figure, eh?), but have yet to play it. But it seems to me as if the game is meant to put you in uncomfortable situations involving little girls. So, were you just seeing "how the other half lives" by playing this? Probably the same reason as a society, we are so against exploitation of children, yet every other episode of every cop/investigative drama revolves around child abuse, pedophilia, incest, etc. Titillation, I guess.

There isn't alot of exploiting going on. There are some uneasy scenes involving the guy who runs the orphanage, though. Not thrilled about those ones. For the most part, it is more about a place run by children and how cruel they can be. That and forbidden love.
