The Dark Spire (DS)-Old old OLD school RPG goodness

    :fatlus

Actually, this is a hardcore old-school WRPG. Why is it all the throwback Western RPGs (including roguelikes) come exclusively from Japan?

japan picks up on all of our stuff 10+ years after it is popular here.

Roguelikes? Nah, we have that market exclusive but roguelikes are generally viewed as open source, freeware community games. There's a few Mystery Dungeons (and I think the MD series is too simplistic for my taste) and the only other Japanese TRUE roguelike I know is called Ema or something like that...

and it's weeeeeird. In one game, my 8 year old girl familiar got pregnant after drinking well water and an alien burst from her stomach killing an entire town.

But yeah, Class of Heroes and Dark Spire are on my list of TO GET. I like how the sound track will include the regular tracks and the old school 8-bit tracks. I also like how the game includes flavor text and in-game party banter which is something a lot of JRPGs lack.

there's a flash demo on the japanese website although i can't tell what the heck i'm doing

I'm getting Class of Heroes when it comes out as well. My PSP has pretty much become my ipod when I'm on the bus playing Etrian Odyssey on my DS. I need a good game for it.

Also, is it just me, or is Atlus finally more or less on the upswing again, after a few years of a few gems buried beneath all the mediocre ports?

With EO II late last year, and CoH and The Dark Spire being released soon, they seem to to be on a can't miss streak (My World, My Way notwithstanding).

EDIT: And before Mora chimes in, all the MegaTen games recently released/coming soon (isn't there supposed to be a DS offshoot or something coming out here soon?) as well.

it seems like atlus has finally found their "niche" and they're hitting home. i think they were holding back before but they're starting to release a lot of handheld games which generally sell more than the console counterparts.

i like atlus. they're really communicative with their fans and like me they value good packaging (has there been an atlus game with a black and white manual?).

i'm kind of rambling here, but this is why no first person shooter has ever been a "halo" killer. people criticize halo for its design, sure, but bungie is really personal with their players and they give their fans what they want to play. that's the most important thing. a customer for life is always better than a one-timer.

I was never aware that Altus needed to make a comeback!

Seems like they've been producing/creating quality titles for quite some time~~

I seem to remember the LAST Atlus topic (or was it the one before...there've been so many lately!) a number of people whining about how they had been in the habit of releasing the equivalent of "shovelware," just to generate sales from the type of people the ":fatlus" emote was coined to poke fun at.

Granted, it most likely was only Gloomy and maybe Mora with those arguments, but in a way, it was a valid criticism. I've bought a LOT of Atlus stuff in the past few years (mostly handheld), but I've also avoided a lot more, as it seems they were on about a 1:3 (or greater) hit-miss ratio there for a while.

And Toaster, I'm still up for your spare copy of EO II if you still have it...internet was down for a bit, and I was busy getting this contest thing finalized. PM me again and we can figure out how to work it out.

do you like wizardry/might and magic/etrian odyssey/pretty much any of sirtech' and interplay's earlier games?

if so, then yes. if not, then there's a 99% chance you'll hate it.
