Procrastination for the sake of procrastinators

Congress postpones digital TV transition to June

"The House voted 264-158 on Wednesday to postpone the shutdown of analog TV signals to June 12, to address growing concerns that too many Americans won't be ready by the Feb. 17 deadline that Congress set three years ago."

88.2% of Americans have cable, which means they're all set. There are plenty of digital converter boxes out there. And yet there are STILL people out there that aren't ready for this? This is a testament to LAZY AMERICA!

I think those numbers are made up.

Yeah, the liberals are making all of this up, just like they made up Richard Nixon!

Nixon was a robot, I guess that counts as semi-real. But really, there isn't any excuse to postpone the transition. I bet if the 12% of Americans lost their TV they would have gotten those converter boxes real quick.

I think it's mostly because poor people are still poor.

This is really dumb. I doubt there will be a significant increase of "preparedness" by June. TV and radio is already saturated with PDAs for the switch. Anyone who hasn't been paying attention to them by now is unlikely to suddenly develop an interest in the next four months.

A lot of states are sending out coupons for these boxes so you can get them for $10, and not $50...

This is stupid. If you haven't gotten on the ball by now, you might as well be without TV. This thing has been in the works for a long time now. More than 3 years, at least.

Way to lack any sort of compassion or understanding.

Not everyone is as well-off as you.

God, I don't even understand why they are shutting down analog signal in the first place.

The government ran out of coupons for the converter boxes because of the high demand. They're postponing the switch over until they can catch up and allow more people a fair shake at getting the box for a reasonable price.

I seriously doubt that 88% of the country has cable but even so - 12% of the country is still millions of people.

And if you already have digital cable - why does it concern you?

                        Motivation behind the transition includes

                        * Potentially higher image and sound quality over analogue broadcast (though in practice it can be worse).
                        * Freeing radio spectrum space, which can then be auctioned off for other purposes.
                        * Multiplexed subchannels—which can carry entirely separate programming.
I use Dish so it's of little concern when it happens to me.

                          1. You're not a good representation of the typical poor American.

                          2. Most poor people don't have next-gen consoles and digital TVs.

                            I don't watch television.

God forbid they pick up a book or something.

I'd wager a good 90% of that 12% are Mexican Americans.

Meaning one of the major issues would be the language barrier, not laziness.

                              ...and that's why.
