    Recycling Enemies

    What are your thoughts on having enemies from earlier dungeons make re-appearances as enemies in later dungeons?

    The few times I've seen this done in standard games (where it didn't feel like the enemies were recycled out of sheer laziness), I did like it.

    In my main RM3 game, what I'm trying to do with my battle system is to make it so that the player needs to figure out a strategy in order to do well (since you need to charge up before using powerful spells, you need to make the most of them), even against standard monsters.

    And since the battle frequency is rather thin, I feel like by the time the player figures out how to really thwomp an enemy, they'll only see them another one or two times before finishing the "dungeon." So, I figured I'd use those same enemies later in the game, anywhere where their appearance would also make sense (alongside some new, tougher monsters, of course).

    Do you think you'd like to see something like this, so that developing a strategy would really allow for a payoff, or would it come across as lazy or boring to see some of the same monsters halfway through the game as you saw at the beginning?

    Re: Recycling Enemies

    I have done whet you described, and I liked the results. I didn't do it out of laziness, I did it because I was out of room to add any new enemies. Nearly every RPG I've ever played has done this to some extent, and as long as you do it well, it works.

    I also like the idea of:

    "Aaah...it's one of those damn giant yellow chick things from the beginning of the game! This should be a snap!"

    ~~~
    "OH MY GOD...IT KILLED ME!"
    LOL! It grew up.
      I agree with Obright. It's not a bad idea. I've seen that in other games as well. Besides a little familiarity standing next to a huge new foe can be comforting.
        Usually, if I was going to recycle an enemy, I'd give it a palette swap (assuming you're not in Page's situation where you've run out of room for new enemies), and then maybe add more HP, more strength, maybe an extra skill or something, but leave the enemy's base strengths and weaknesses the same.
        As for your question, I agree with Page above.
