A couple tutorials I need to get some feedback about.

This is my first post here, so hi! I recently dug out RPGM1 to play around with again and I've been doing some experimenting and figuring out some useful stuff about the file formats and what not. There's a couple tutorials I could share but they're ones that might be kind of rule breaking so I want to get some feedback about whether or not they'd be okay to post.

The first one would be about getting RPGM1 set up on the PSP with the Popstation emulator and how to convert game saves to work with it. I think this one should be okay as my directions would only cover getting it to work with a copy of the game you own and not have any links to pirated versions, but since the second tutorial will definitely need some discussion, I'll just hold off on doing anything.

The second one would be about how the password system for RPGM1 works. I've figured out where they are stored in the files and how to alter them. I saw in a previous topic that the general consensus was that only select people should know how to do it and I won't post it if the admins don't want me to, but believe me when I say that anyone with a basic knowledge of hex editing can bypass the password system extremely easily.

So anyhow, please give me some feedback on these. Thanks!

Sorry, we cannot supply any information to people that can be used to infringe on Agetec's copyrights. that includes giving any information on an emulator that can only play backups of software, and not the original disc.

as for the converting save thing, this I'm actually interested. as far as I knew, the only way to convert the save to the PSV format (what the psp uses for PS1 games) was to use a PS3 to do the conversion. if there is some workaround, it could be incredibly helpful with converting games to the PS3 format. unless the popstation thing uses a different save format, of course. we would love it if you could help us remove the evil dex drive from the equasion.

second one would be very good to know. thinking about it more, I believe we're past the point where we have to worry about our games being stolen and reposted online under someone else's name. the community has shrunk enough where this happening seems impossible.

Alright, I'll just skip how you convert stuff for Popstation (not like there aren't a million tutorials out there for that already) and just do the save conversion stuff. It definitely works for getting a save onto the PS3 as well; Popstation saves can be transferred onto a virtual memory card by hooking the PSP up with a usb cable. Though you do still have to have the game in some kind of PC memory card format to start with.

Agetec really should release RPGM1 as a downloadable title on PSN so we can do this completely legally. It's pretty small as PS1 games go (67 MB) and I'm sure it would sell fairly well, too. Everyone in the community who still hopes for RPG Tsukuru 4 to be localized would buy it, and the title alone would intrigue a decent amount of PSN shoppers as well.

Anyhow, I'll get the tutorials up pretty quick. Neither of them are too involved so it shouldn't take too long.

so there's actually a way to convert saves to the psv format without using a PS3?

You still need the PS3, but it eliminates the need for a memory card adapter. I've got the first tutorial posted so you can go take a look at what's involved. And could you also fix that part where it read as a stimpy smilie instead of a file path, lol? There's no edit button for me in that subforum for whatever reason.

Hey, I really, REALLY appreciate that you posted this tip, because it's going to help some people who forgot/lost their passwords long ago and locked themselves out of editing their own game.

But I have a serious qualm. Some people wanted to keep their code secret, not because they're worried about other people stealing their games, but either because they wanted their system to be unique, or because they wanted to make the password a reward (e.g. in Jugem's Tetris).

I know this is a rare situation, and it's worth weighing benefits against drawbacks. What does everyone think?

                the positives outweigh the negatives.

i think most of our community is mature enough to honor the password and use it for recovering their own lost pass' rather then for stealing others ideas. im up for anything that sparks renewed interest in rpg maker 1.

Re: A couple tutorials I need to get some feedback about.

Haha, two replies while I was typing this!

I think the benefit of people being able to see how intricate effects are pulled off simply by looking at the event data rather than trying to puzzle it out on their own outweighs the disadvantages. Sure, people will be able to copy custom systems more easily, but if they can use that knowledge to make their games better, then I think it's a good thing. It still takes a lot of work to adapt a custom system well, so games that just take someone's system and plop it in will be easily distinguished as knock offs by the community.

There's some courtesies that should definitely be followed when applying the information you get by viewing a game's data files, though. If you're using a lot of stuff from a game, like making a battle system similar to Abyss of Vinsaga's, give the original author credit for paving the way for you. Obviously, you can't force people to do this, but that's what the community is for. People who just rip things off without giving credit will inevitably be called out on it.

That's my thoughts, anyhow. I realize that this is a kind of controversial subject and that's why I waited to get an okay from the admins before posting it.
