    Ruining dishes!

WARNING: This topic is not for people that have weak stomachs.

I recently ruined a great thermal mug by leaving half a cup of hot chocolate in it for about two weeks. By the time I noticed, it was stinky as hell and chunkified.

I washed it out with hot water and dish soap, and left it in my desk drawer to dry. It's been over a week, and it still smells awful. I think it's beyond saving at this point.

Have you ever ruined dishes, cups, or other containers by being a clueless (or lazy) dumbass?

I would, but I'm at work. There's no bleach around here. Besides, that would probably just make it smell like bleach instead of mold. I love drinking bleach as much as the next person, but I don't like it when my other drinks smell like it.

The exterior of the cup is metal, but the interior is some funky plastic that's difficult to clean. I should just ask my boss for another one. :3

We had a tupperware thing with a permanent spaghetti sauce residue. I think it's because my sister stuck it in the microwave. That got tossed before our last move though. She also likes to leave half-full mugs of tea or coffee lying around for a few weeks at a time. None of them have been irredeemable yet.

Ech, dairy products get all kinds of rancid over time.

I once forgot some leftover gumbo in a mini-fridge. I was going on vacation and, forgetting about the seafood soup [the only contents of the fridge], I unplugged the refrigerator. Two weeks later and the gumbo has had just enough time to thaw out and grow visible bacterial colonies... just a-munching away on the rotting seafood.

I refused to experience that smell, but luckily I have an adventurous (or masochistic) friend who gave it a whiff. While I can't tell you exactly what it smelled of, I can tell you that foul smells can, indeed, induce vomiting.

Guiltily, I tossed the entire Tupperware container in the dumpster by the building.

I had a glass that I just kind of pitched right into the sink, soft ball style, across the room. It shattered right forth. Luckily (unfortunately?) nobody was around to see it and the sink was empty. To this day I have no idea why I even did it.

One time I (rather intelligently) put a plastic cover over pasta sauce I was heating on the stove in a metal pot.

It caught fire, and by the time I put it out the cover had melted into a dark brown waxy goo that mixed with the pasta sauce and hardened over, under, around and through the pot.

I have a Glad plastic container with some cooked pinto beans in it. They smell rather rancid after about 2 weeks. I know not whether the 'dish' is redeemable, but I can now make an educated guess as to what natto smells like.

Getting trashed on Listerine instead is better for your health.

oh i didn't realize it was plastic.

because ceramic mugs are bleached all the time at restaurants and coffee shops. and they don't taste like bleach

Have you tried using vinegar? I've been able to save a few of my cups by soaking the insides with it. The vinegar smell took a few hours to go away, but it took the rotten smell with it.

I always end up ruining my good tupperware by using it as a bowl (when I'm too lazy to do dishes) for saucy foods like spaghetti, ramen, etc. Those orange stains never come out, and eventually they get too gross-looking to keep.

I'm also guilty of forgetting my coffee cups (with dairy-based creamer) in the car...until I smell them; I'm down to just one good mug now.

Exact same thing happened to me. And yes, I think your mug is screwed. The container I had, I kept for a few months, never putting anything in it, washing it every so often and hoping the smell would air out eventually. It didn't.
