The hip vinyl topic for pretentious jerkwads

After my best friend got a new turntable, I started collecting some records I like. I would like to have my own turntable eventually, but he has a much better sound system, so I mostly listen to stuff over there.

I grew up listening to records, and I like how they sound compared to CDs.

So far I only have a few records.

Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle

Peter Gabriel - So, Security and Plays Live

    Ministry - Filth Pig

Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky

Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill

Todd Rundgren - Faithful, A Wizard a True Star

Portishead - Portishead (on the way in the mail)

I'm actively seeking anything on vinyl from Primus, The Reverend Horton Heat, Bjork, Ministry, and many others. I would very much like to find a copy of "US" by Peter Gabriel, and a copy of "La Sexorcisto" or "Astro Creep 2000" from White Zombie.

What do you have, or what are you seeking?

This topic is about collecting vinyl records and turntables. Please keep the comments on topic. Thanks.

I've been noticing that vinyl is coming back a little.

I would like to get my hands on the vinyl releases from Bloc Party
and Japanese group Dragon Ash. Oh, and Nujabes as well.

I wouldn't play them, but it'd be nice to have them (the only exception
would probably be anything from Nujabes though. He's got some exclusives
and instrumental versions to some certain songs).

I've recently started gathering vinyl records from various music stores around long island. I've never really listened to them as a kid or anything, so I don't have any real sentimental reasoning behind it other than vinyls are cool and they give you indie cred~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So far I've picked up Ten by Pearl Jam, as well as Gish, Siamese Dream and Adore by The Smashing Pumpkins. I mean, these are hardly impressive as I'm pretty sure they are all albums that are still printed to this day but I love having larger pictures of the art that is typically shrunk down for the cd release and they sound great, especially in the case of the mono mix on Adore which actually kinda gives the album another perspective. I'm seeking out three other pumpkins albums, which are not still printed and much more expensive, I've already lost about five auctions on ebay for their album, Machina in the past month >[. Ultimately I want to take the records and make a sort of shrine of their records to keep in my recording/practicing space.

      I know, it's lame.

Other bands I'm looking for vinyls of: The Smiths and hey I wouldn't mind picking up some Portishead myself~

I've never listened to a vinyl record. I don't get what the difference is. :V

          The sound quality is crappier.

Hush up, you. Stick to your FLAC format.

It's for people who like having vintage, nostalgic things. Physical representation of their collection.

              Something to read over.

But that's not really what this topic is about.

EDIT - I like how decent vinyl sounds on a good system. For me, it's easier to differentiate between all the sounds (vocals, instruments, samples, etc). But maybe that's just me. Your listening experience may vary!

How would you possibly get the difference if you've never heard one?

                I don't have any records.

                Just lots of CDs

I'm still working on getting a record player, but I've got a few records.

Queen - The Works (My favorite one)
                    Puccini - La Boheme
Levant - Rhapsody in Blue (Yummm)
and a few other old school ones, including the West Side Story soundtrack.

                    Sivart: I'm a MAN.

I started collecting 12" vinyl in the 80's, and I still have a lot of cocteau twins, bunnymen, and U2. Probably my rarest one is the 1979 release of U2-3, on CBS records (not Island). There's a typo on the label & everything.

As far as full albums I don't have many any more. They were either stolen, or melted in the trunk of my car. I still have MEN WITHOUT HATS (), and some tribute to William Burroughs with Coil and Cabaret Voltaire on it.

I like the sound of vinyl. It has a depth and a warmth that all of the cd clarity in the world will never touch. I'm glad for CD's, and I like them way better than say, cassettes, but I'll probably always love vinyl.

Re: The hip vinyl topic for pretentious jerkwads

I like CDs and vinyl. I don't want everything on vinyl, just certain stuff that I really enjoy. I don't want to pay a whole lot for it, either, so I don't really care about limited edition copies, first editions, etc.

Most of my purchases have been from record stores around here, and have ranged in price from $2.99 (Faithful, Eye in the Sky) to about $15 (Licensed to Ill, Filth Pig). All of them are used, and some are in better shape than others.

I own Thriller by Michael Jackson on vinyl, and that's it!
I'm jealous! I actually owned that album when I was like 4 or 5 years old. I also had the ghostbusters soundtrack and a few other weird records.

I helped convince my friend to get a cheap copy of "youthquake" from dead or alive, just so we could listen to this horrible song. The first time he put it on, we both could not stop laughing. It's really bad. I WANT YOUR LUUUUUUUUUVVVVVUUUUHUHUHUHUUUUUUOVVVV!

It was my mother's, the sleeve is in pretty crappy condition and I've never actually listened to it since I don't own a record player. I really enjoy owning it since Thriller is such an awesome album.

I have a bunch of vinyl records, I don't really know how many. I just picked up the new Animal Collective album the other day. It's always nice when newer stuff includes a code for digital download, which a lot of people do now, so you can have the convenience of MP3s in addition to the quality of vinyl. Rilo Kiley's Under The Blacklight actually went as far as including a CD version of the record in the sleeve.

If you're listening to it on the right system, particularly if the vinyl is 180-gram or higher, the difference is incredible. Digital music sounds alright, sure, but the highs are thin and the lows are muddy -- though it doesn't really come through without a good system and high volume. I just love the crisp highs and thick, natural lows that you get with vinyl.

I inherited my dad's collection from when he was a teen. So I have a lot of Zeppelin, Floyd, Clapton, Hendrix, and whatnot.

                              Don't copy that floppy!
