    My World, My Way (DS)

I've been hearing a lot about this game lately (Princess can either battle, or choose to run away like a little pansy), and I've been meaning to add another title to my small DS library. Atlus is apparently the masterminds producing this, so I'm a little skeptical since they made that terrible Lufia game 5 years ago. What say you, Pavvie?

Atlus makes works of art that aren't always fun to play. Wait.

I just read the preview on Gamespot a few hours ago myself, and I'm intrigued....but it seems the "pout" thing might wear out its novelty fairly quickly. But it IS kinda REALLY girly, but not in a "Imagine Animal Doctor" or "Petz Horses"-type of way, so that fact does hold sway for me.

And you say you're wary because Atlus made a bad Lufia game five years ago?!?!?!?

Do you even BROWSE the video game forum, Bonanza?

      :fatlus

Oh, Bonanza, if you are looking for a GOOD (bordering on GREAT) DS RPG from Atlus, both marcus and I (I'm putting words in his mouth, but I don't foresee him disagreeing with me) would highly recommend Etrian Odyssey II. If you came up in the old school, and are tired of easy RPGs that coddle you, and want a brutally difficult game that will consistently frustrate you for the first few hours, but once you get over the initial hurdle, is EXTREMELY enjoyable and rewarding, then this game is for you. Best Atlus DS game I've played in quite some time (and there are a TON of them), and probably my handheld game of the year.

If you don't trust me, find the reviews online. They all pretty much are consistent with what I'm saying.

When I get some capital, I'll try to check it out. Thanks, Perv.

Special note: I browse the video game forum very rarely, as the bulk of my time is spent browsing free forum. Combined with the fact that I'm very picky with my video games, especially new titles, I guess you could say I hadn't expected you guys to refer to Atlus by your description.

You're putting no words in my mouth as I recommend this game whenever I can.

Also, they're coming out with Dark Spire which is pretty much Wizardry with the option to choose "stylized" graphics or "oldschool."

This game doesn't look special at all. Looks pretty boring actually.

They ported Disgaea to the DS, so if you missed it on the PS2, I'd recommend checking that out.

The lion's share of what Atlus translates anymore is shovelware.

The same company that made this made Master of Monster Lair (Which looks almost identical and supposedly sucks pretty bad). I wouldn't buy it; if you're looking for something incredibly girly for the DS I'd get the Rhapsody remake instead.

The fun is in the challenge and design. The Wizardry games were difficult but perfectly balanced requiring you to experiment with different setups to find the correct combination of party setups. Personally, Etrian Odyssey required too much grinding but thankfully Etrian Odyssey 2 balanced things out; it was still hard, because monsters followed the same progression as characters, but once you learned how the game mechanics work you knew how to keep a leg up above the competition.

Games these days think adding bells and whistles = fun. Modern developers think 30 million side-quests and cheap features like a half-assed weapon building system or relieve your bowels system is supposed to make up for weak gameplay. It doesn't. The main game comes first. Extra crap comes once you have a strong main game.

Man I am so super excited about Dark Spire. I didn't think it would get an American release. I guess EO sold better than expected?

I can't find sales figures but the first game sold poorly. 30,000 in America, a little more than 100k in Japan. I was surprised when they released a sequel and I'm even more surprised they're releasing Dark Spire.

Complain about Atlus all you want (and I make fun of their shovelware as well) but they care about their fans on a personal level and that's what gets people to come back and buy their products.

Also, they don't pander to Sony have been known to kill small companies like this. They wouldn't let Working Designs sell their PS2 games at full price because they weren't new or 3D despite the translations costing huge amounts of money.

If there is anybody here who considers himself a serious RPG gamer but refuses to play Persona 3/4 because they think the games caters to the weaboo crowd, I'm personally coming to your house to punch you in the face.

"Isn't that the game where you can DATE PEOPLE!! And they talk in HONORIFICS???"

                      D:

As for Etrian Odyssey II, I got pretty far in that game before my DS kicked the bucket. The music really started to grate, and there really wasn't much else to do within the game world other than to ride the level-up train to the top. It was a challenging game though, and it required you to put some actual thought into your actions. I really liked that you couldn't fight everything you saw thanks to the FOE system. So I'll give it that.

I loved them back when they localized rejected first-party Sony games like
Sky Gunner and Dual Hearts. They even fixed some issues with Sky Gunner.
They're not as bad as NIS but I wouldn't mind if Atlus localized Sky Gunner II.

EDIT: Hmm? I thought there was a sequel that never got translated.

                        Disregard the above statement.

What an amazing happenstance...it's barely 2009, and there's already an Atlus topic.

It's already been made clear that every few months, some form of FF topic emerges, and at least twice or three times a year, there is some Zelda-related topic. I believe that topics that revolve around discussion of Atlus games (meaning, not the games themselves necessarily, like the Persona 4 topic, but discussion of Atlus in general) seem to materialize every three or four months.

So, anyone care to wager on how many more "Atlus is for weeaboos"/"Atlus only localizes shovelware"/"At least 2 Atlus games this year deserve to be GOTY" topics we'll see before year end?
