    Children 18:3

I received Children 18:3 for Christmas and I was pleasantly surprised after listing to them. I heard of them and what they sounded like after listening to a sample CD my sister picked up a while ago. I heard their song All My Balloons, and was like, "Eh, their good, but that is probably their best song on their record." So, I was told to ask for a few CDs this Christmas and being I that didn't know what to ask for, (I already have most of the good hard-core and rock CDs that came out) I decided to ask for Children 18:3. I finally opened it a few days after Christmas and I didn't really know what to expect before popping it in, other than hoping that they had more than one good song. To my surprise, the whole stinkin' CD is good! I didn't expect to hear such catchy beats, chords, and choruses. And for being a punk band, they're actually serious, which is pretty surprising in light of all the other punk bands out there. Standout songs are hard to choose, because most of them are pretty good overall. All My Balloons is a good song with a super catchy hook, and it is definitely their most punk song. Other songs, such as Homemade Valentine, stray more towards to the rock end of the spectrum. Another song that incorporates some rock is Even Sleeping, but it still retains a far amount of punk in the mix. In my opinion, I think it's a very good song, if slightly touching, about someone dying in a hospital room and wanting to bring them back. Basically, I really enjoyed their self-titled album, and was really surprised with how good it is. I give it a solid 4 out of 5. If you like rock, but aren't too crazy about punk, give these guys a chance because might catch yourself singing the simple-but-catchy chorus of Mock the Music.

What does it matter if they're Christian?

Children 18:3 is a Christian punk band from Morris, Minnesota. The band is composed of homeschooled siblings[1] David, Lee Marie and Seth Hostetter.[3] The lead vocals are shared by David and Lee Marie.[4] Their band's name refers to the Bible verse Matthew 18:3, "And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Yeah, Navane, didn't you hear that science disproved religion? I'll have to send you the article about it that I read on the internet.

                      That's not what he meant.

This isn't really something I would listen to, so I'll reserve my opinions. I have to ask, though: I didn't pick up any overt Christian tones (maybe it's just that song)--if this is the case for all of their music, why label themselves as "Christian punk"? It makes me wonder if they, like many other groups who operate within scenes, are just using a niche to gain notoriety. After all, it'd be a lot easier to be the "best Christian punk" band than to become the "best punk band". Plus, working within a niche makes it easier to market to and be noticed by your demographic. And of course, like Valk points out, ultimately that all defeats the purpose of being "punk".

Anyway, that's just the curious meandering of my mind.

This is off-topic, but there are actually just as many, if not more, Christian labeled hardcore/metal bands than there are secular ones.

I don’t really know. And it’s not just that one song either, pretty much all of them don’t directly sing about God. They hint at Christian themes, but are rather hard to decipher. Basically, if you didn’t know it was a Christian band to begin with, you most likely wouldn’t know after listening to them…which kind of defeats the purpose of being a Christian band. You'd be surprised at how many Christian-labeled bands that hardly sing about God.

Anyway, maybe since they’re all Christians is the reason why they labeled themselves as a Christian band. If they only labeled themselves as a Christian punk band mostly for the money, well then they aren’t going to get much. From what I know, Christian rock bands (or punk bands in this case) make little money in this genre. They’d be better off to go mainstream if they’re in it for the money.

                            I refuse to believe this.

The only reason I can think of that they label themselves as a christian punk band is because they misunderstand the genre that they're attempting to play.
