    a new laptop

I'm starting college soon and I get to buy a shiny new laptop. what would you recommend for a guy who doesn't play a whole lot of computer games outside of Left4Dead with his buddies, has a whole lot of music, and will be using the laptop to edit movies with?
obviously I want to go with a Mac because I'm a douche bag, but I'd like your opinions as well

    Re: a new laptop

I just got this today and sold my 2.4ghz MacBook to my girlfriend. Migrating my info off of a Time Machine back up right now.

I would highly recommend the MacBook pro, especially for a movie editor. Everyone that I've known in multimedia and film are cutting stuff up on Macs using Final Cut or After Effects. The newest model has a pretty good graphics card which is pretty vital to rendering anything.

The only downside is price. I have nothing better to spend my money on, and it's a worthwhile investment. Especially if you plan to utilize it as a video editor.

if you want a laptop that is good i id say an HP, but if you want to do video editing go with a mac, to me a mac is only good for video editing. and DO NOT get a alienware they are over priced and the parts they use are junk

and as for the SHINY part i do think there is anyone who does SHINY like these guys and they have good parts and you will get to do your gaming http://www.falcon-nw.com/

My Dell has been pretty good for me. I don't use it for anything special, just web browsing and such.

            Re: a new laptop

I'm probably old fashioned but I cannot cut and edit video on a little laptop.

Anything but a two monitor hardware intensive workstation, preferably a Mac Pro with two of those widescreen monitors, simply will not do! >>>[

I use windows and Avid to edit now, but Smurtle's recommendation is definitely best for you.

I'm just a college student, I'm not gonna be doing anything too fancy-schmancy. if need be, I'm able to use the video lab. the laptop's really just for classes and editing on my own time. also having a computer for my apartment :3

                      Re: a new laptop

For somewhere around $743 I got a Gateway laptop, with 4GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, HDMI, Web Cam, 2-something ghz dual core processor, Wireless N, and other crap I'd probably never need. It's rare to find specs like that for the price.

Don't get a Mac. Please. (Unless you already know you like them, then I would support you).

Really? Since when do Americans have Arabian accents?

Macs are what I learned to edit on, so every time I have to use a PC to edit footage I've shot it's kind of a hassle. I'm just a lot more comfortable using Final Cut, really, and considering film's my major, seems like editing is what I'd be using it for a majority of the time

Sounds like you really lucked out. We called customer service one time and got a guy we could barely understand.

Anyway, try looking around online for a Mac with a 512 Mb graphics card. With a card like that, it shouldn't take quite as long to render videos.
