    Need help with my game!

Im planning to make a game on rpg maker 1 that incorporates traits of zelda and metal gear. You play as a Ninja who is ordered to assassinate the leader of another ninja clan. The stages are filled with enemy ninjas and booby traps. You can use your ninja sword to cut through enemies, shuriken to toss at enemies or traps and smoke screen to hide yourself. The goal is to get through every level without dying or getting seen by enemy ninjas.

I just want to know if it possible to get a hack-n-slash to work in rpg maker 1? and im very open to suggestions and comments. so sorry for this "noobish" post everybody. hehe

yes its doable but it will take a ton of space and isnt recommended for novices. games of this style requires some knowledge of the deeper workings and nuances of rpg maker 1. just focus on one element at a time, starting with the main ones then add other elements as desired. thats the only way to tackle difficult aspects like this. good luck.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

Sounds like a damn good idea if you can pull it off. Good luck.

thanks! I am focusing on the cbs thing. I really want a real-time hack-n-slash zelda style rpg game. Yup I know a little about this and that but this will take a while to figure out. Can you suggest what I should do about the battle system?

the hardest thing to do will be tossing the shrunken (distance event activation). to achieve that you need to either make the event fixed or do some kind of switch thing (step on a tile in an area moves a guy and flicks a switch relative to its position, if it meets the distance then you can toss the shrunken. when you move to the next square the switch will change or maybe the guy will move and thus the switch will change.) this is an expensive way to do it but very possible as a special event but not practical to always use it.

the other stuff is fairly easy to do and just takes some creativity to hammer out. if you ever played MG VR missions then you most likely have a good idea on what kinds of things to develop.

Are there any videos of a hack'n slash for RPGM 1?

About 40 seconds in. The closest to actual "hack-and-slash" that I know of. The biggest issue with attempting anything hack-and-slash is that enemies cannot trigger when they touch you.

Thanks... I have a question though. How do you animate those tokens in one place? They spin around and around. How do you do that?

and how did you make the bridge scene? sorry i just want to know.

Re: Need help with my game!

I think that the spinning tokens are done by having a sprite with three variations of the coins. If you put an character event in "step only" you'll see them walking on the same place, showing 3 different animations (standing, left step, standing, right step, repeat) substitute these with coins and it'll seem to be spinning.

Re: Need help with my game!

Wow thanks a bunch guys.. but now im starting to have doubts about this game. I dont know if im going to continue this.

                    1) its memory hogging
                    2) the custom sprites arent enough for the game. The ninja guy will need tons of ninja equipment like: His shuriken, his smoke bomb, his grappling hook, etc. (Can the custom sprites exceed 10?)
                    3) the story isnt much of an excite. Its just you as a ninja solving puzzles to get to the last boss. and theres just one boss cos i dont have the luxury of having tons of custom sprites in one game.
                    4) This game needs a lot of coding. more coding = more time

What do you think guys? Should i continue this idea?

Re: Need help with my game!

try it out and at the very least you will get a good feel for the next game you undertake. sometimes by making an abject failure you end up creating the ground work for a classic right afterwords.

the bridge scene is easily done by making the moving custom sprite activate on touch to move you forward (or back which is controlled i suspect by a switch activated when you touch either side of the bank). once on the sprite, id hazard that it would be switch to stand still and then free roam once you step off onto either side of the bank (more switches).

oh and id suggest that jesters hunt have the char hit with paralysis to prevent the chars legs from walking during the jump sequence and the ice movement. a cure all status at the end of the event would be needed to return the char back to normal. that would make it a bit more realistic but its nitpicking.

edit: you can have 3 separate sprites per sprite bar providing you force it to not activate and be used as a non activated event (you can bypass the problem with a big of thinking). if you look at some of the sprites in my game forum you will see what i mean as far as different placement. if your pro star you can make 9 separate events (like sir sniffy was famous for) but the work involved in getting it to show up right just isnt worth the hassle.

Umm draygone said the hero was standing on to 2 separate events in the bridge scene. I was thinking there was one invisible event and one event with a bridge custom sprite but im still confused on how those two could work.

i want to know cos this could flare up my ninja game thanks again for the reply

im not sure how he did it. i know that i could achieve it with something close to what i suggested. have him explain what he did.

You are correct about how I did the bridges, Karr. The extra detail you missed, the second event, is a graphicless event that sits under the moving bridge pieces. You step on them, you fall into the water and are transported back to the start of the bridge. As for paralysis, I didn't know that when I made Jester's Hunt, but I have used it in some new ice puzzles in my current game.

Yodas, RPGM1 is a memory hog, period. But this custom stuff really does eat up memory in a hurry. Thank goodness for the "Change Scenario" feature. I could only fit three full levels on a memory card in Jester's Hunt. Planning around the memory limit is important. Once you get an idea of how much more game you can fit on a single memory card, you'll be able to figure out the best way to split it (in my case, splitting the hub level in half with a teleport going back and forth between each card). And as you get more experience with RPGM1, you'll be able to find ways to [gah, forgot the word] so that things don't take up as much memory.

Whether you continue this project or not, what Karr said. If you give it up, it'll be good experience for your next game.

Thanks! Ill use this to improve my game. Thanks draygone. Jester's hunt inspired me so much to create something for RPGM1 again. havent touched this stuff in a while. lol
