A question about Wii's

I'm getting a Wii for X-Mas. Does it cost extra to connect it to the Internet? Or do you just connect it to the Internet and it works for free?

Basically, does it run for free on the same Internet access as your PC, or does it cost extra?

PS: How exactly do I connect it to the Internet? Do I just plug it into the wall or do I need some sort of router? If so, can I use my PC router?
