actor slits own throat on stage in prop mixup

Holy crap, this sounds like it's straight out of Phoenix Wright.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008...r-slits-throat

An actor slit his throat on stage when the prop knife for his suicide scene turned out to be a real one.

Daniel Hoevels, 30, slumped over with blood pouring from his neck while the audience broke into applause at the "special effect". Police are investigating whether the knife was a mistake or a murder plot. They are questioning the rest of the cast, and backstage hands with access to props; they will also carry out DNA tests.

Things went wrong at Vienna's Burgtheater as Hoevels' character went to "kill himself" in the final scene of Friedrich Schiller's Mary Stuart, about Mary Queen of Scots, on Saturday night

It was only when he did not get up to take a bow that anyone realised something had gone wrong.

Though bleeding profusely, Hoevels survived because the knife missed the carotid artery as it sliced into his neck. Wolfgang Lenz, a doctor who treated him, said: "Just a little bit deeper and he would have been drowning in his own blood."

One officer told Austrian TV news: "The rumours are wild, with some claiming that he was the victim of jealous rival.

"We don't know anything for sure yet; we have to work through everyone."

The knife was reportedly bought at a local shop; one possibility is that the props staff forgot to blunt its blade. "The knife even still had the price tag on it," an investigator said.

After emergency treatment at a hospital, Hoevels declared that the show must go on, and returned to the stage on Sunday night with a bandage tied around his neck, ready to once again meet his mock demise.

Oh my God, like pursuing a career in theatre doesn't already scare the crap out of me.

Could be a Prestige thing, too...

Dude, the almost exact same thing happened in an episode of Monk.

My dad had a family friend who died from a heart attack during charades. I think I can relate.

The conclusion easily loops back to the introduction.

Use a better PROP knife next time. I dont care how safe you tell me it is, if Im supposed to pretend to slit my throat with it, Id be checking it myself to make sure its dull as hell. Goddamn.

You would think they would just use the same knife they used in practice. If they thought they did, then it might be attempted murder.

Why the hell did they buy a real knife and dull it for this? Don't they have stage weapons that DON'T HAVE AN EDGE SO NO ONE GETS HURT for this sort of thing?

                      Bah. Actors.

I agree, and I think that someone should've noticed long before that. I was a stage manager for a little while in high school when I was taking tech theater classes. Our props were handled by me and the set crew. All of the prop swords and knives endured a lot of scrutiny before each performance to ensure that they were still safe to use. Hell, we liked to play with them, too, so we knew they weren't that dangerous. It's difficult for me to believe that someone else on staff wouldn't have removed that knife long before the actor got to use it.

                        WHO DONE IT???

I wonder if he realized it right away and he was such a dedicated actor that he risked his life to keep in character.

"Oh ****, the blade is cutting... but I cant let the audience down! Must... keep... cutting *gurgle gurgle* Aaaand scene! You're a superstar, baby *cue blackness, collapses with satisfied smile*

I don't know a single student stage manager who'd let this happen, let alone a professional. Just this week I had to get a prop revolver approved for a play by a company manager, and she would not let me use it because it looked too real. I had to use a bright orange one that came packaged with a plastic police badge and tiny handcuffs.

What I'm saying is that it's gotta be murder.
