    Palahniuk's Choke

I bought this book a while back, and just recently started reading it. Come to find out, there's a film version in current release. Within 8 weeks (the last week listed on imdb is November 23rd), it went from playing on 463 screens to 3 screens, and has not broken the $2 million mark domestically.

Has anyone seen this, or (besides Riotsword) read the book?

The trailer seems to be fishing so hard for the movie to look interesting. Just like that Russel Crowe and Leo DiCaprio movie trailer.

Yeah, and the Animal Crossing commercials are fishing so hard to make it look interesting to middle-aged women, when we all know it's not really all that interesting to anyone.

But remember how Fight Club was marketed? If I had only seen the trailers, and had no idea what it was actually ABOUT, I would have had no desire to see it midnight opening night. Thankfully, before going in, I knew it was about more than good-looking, muscle-bound guys beating the crap out of each other.

Same with Boogie Nights. They marketed it as a disco movie, and again, if I had only seen the trailers, and didn't know what it was actually ABOUT, I wouldn't have driven the hour and fifteen minutes to see it opening weekend in Chicago before it opened wide two weeks later.

Moral of the story: For a film with most likely objectionable or controversial content, they will do what they can to market it to the largest possible demographic. That way, it'll sell tickets for at least a few weeks to the unwitting public who doesn't know what it's really about, who will then either really like it, even though, or possibly because, it was nothing like what they were expecting, and will spread its virtues through word-of-mouth, or dislike it and feel duped and offended by the ads, in which case the film will at least have made SOME money.

And of course, there will always be those in the know who will see it regardless of how its marketed, because they know what it is actually ABOUT, and understand why a film like this is marketed in the way it is.

Good book. All his books are good. The movie looked terrible.

The writing style of the book was very refreshing compared to some of the more "dignified" books we ended up reading in school.

Palahniuk is all right by me. :3

Read Catcher in the Rye and Slaughterhouse-Five if your high school doesn't have them on the cirriculum. Better than Choke.

I thought the book was ok, but I didn't like it as much as Fight Club or Survivor. It seemed like he was trying to do a poor man's version of Less Than Zero.
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.
