    Portable Apps.com

I was looking for ways to install and run programs off of an SD card, and as I was searching for a solution I came across portableapps.com. You can download a Suite consisting of eleven programs which includes a fully fledged Word program, Firefox, and Mozilla Thunderbird along with others. The best part about it? It's FREE! You can even download other apps that they offer, and they're all free too. The program is very useful if you don't have a laptop and need to access your files and email on another computer. It's very easy to use, too. This program can be installed on almost any device: SD cards, USB flash-drives, PSPs, MP3 players, iPods, just about anything with memory. Pretty cool, no?

The only problem I'm having is getting it to install other programs that they don't offer. More specifically, Safarie. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get it to install using the Portable Apps program. If anyone knows how to do this, I'd be really appreciative if you would tell me how to do it. Other then this issue I'm having with it, I find it pretty cool. Still, if I can't figure out how to run other programs using Portable Apps (programs that they don't offer on their site), I might try to find another solution. Just in case, does anyone know of a way to install and run kill it, but I'd still like to know.programs off of an SD card? Yeah, I know running programs off of an SD card will eventually kill it, but I'd still like to know.

    EDIT: Fixed.

Ummm....I don't get it. How can you install these apps to run on a PSP (for example)? Wouldn't the PSP's OS need to understand the programs to be able to run them?

Also, is there a reason you kinda trailed off at the end of the post?

What I meant was that you can use the PSP as a storage device for the program.

Yep, I'm an idiot. Idiots tend to trail their sentences off for no apparent reason. They also tend to spell badly.

Useless for you, maybe. But for someone that want to keep their apps portable if they use other computers or want to have a library of useful things on a thumb drive, it's actually very cool.

This technology is not new, however. Several companies that make thumb drives put a program called "U3" on them which is pretty much the same thing, right down to the interface. U3 has corporate intentions though, but it is really great as long as you don't get suckered into buying something. Portable apps on a thumb drive is very useful for a lot of people, so don't knock it.

I will say though that most of the apps are open source apps which is great. A great deal of them are primarily Linux apps, so people can see the value of Linux right from Windows.

The downside to portable applications is how often they are updated. Commonly these companies don't update the available programs to the latest versions as often as they should. For example, U3 probably doesn't even have Firefox 3 yet, but I'd have to check to be sure.

If you like this idea and want to take it a step further, you can actually install a complete (even bootable) Linux operating system on a thumb drive. With an OS and all the applications you use on a thumb drive, you have your own portable computing environment that you can use anywhere that can boot to USB.

There are a lot of cool things you can do with Technology.

I have a thumbdrive with Ubuntu on it that does just that. It really comes in handy when I need to use a computer and all the ones available are password protected.

Whenever I wanted to use a program at school, I would drag it to my thumb drive, then the computer and run that ****. Most often than not I would be able to use the program straight off of my ipod without third party software. I really don't see any practical use of this ****.

You use a Mac, right? Windows programs don't work like that, usually.

You usually can't do that with a 5-8 gig program. At least not without waiting forever just so you can delete it on that public computer.

I just use an external harddrive, so whatevs.

It's mainly for people that don't know how to do that, or want a program to manage it for them. It's kind of like how you don't need a music manager to play your MP3's, but for some it's convenient.

Thumbdrive Ubuntu is awesome. My only complaint is that it boots slow, but that's to be expected. Once it boots up though it seems fast enough.

How much room do you need to install Ubuntu? I only have a 1Gig SD card, but if that is enough space then I'd like to give it a try.

1GB would work, however it wouldn't be recommended. You wouldn't have much space to save personal documents or install programs. 2GB is ideal, but if you just want to give it a shot to try it out, go for it.

I would be careful using Google for searching for how to do that, because most of the articles are outdated and more trouble than they're worth.

Just go to www.ubuntu.com, download the 32-bit CD Image, and burn it to a CD. Boot from the Live CD, and in the menu there is an option to create a USB install. Let me know if you can't find it. It's relatively easy but you have my email address anyway.
