    360 - Horizontal or Vertical?

I'll have a 360 in less than two weeks. I've already figured out how to let it get online via my laptop, but one nagging question remains -

    Horizontal or Vertical?

My desk can accomodate it either way. it's going to have a lot of breathing room no matter what. What I'm concerned with, is if it gets hotter in one position than it does in the other. it looks like either way, it will be sitting on some of it's vents. which ones are the most important to keep exposed? also, the disc drive. is having it vertical going to put more strain on the disc drive, which would spawn DREs? I'm going to be installing damn near any game I get for the system when I play it, but not all games support installation (crackdown) and some perform worse with an installation (halo 3). and of course, old Xbox games cannot be installed.

so I really need to know this from the long-time 360 owners. as far as heat and DREs are concerned, which position is best?

any other tips I need to know to keep the system alive as long as possible?

I know the power brick is fairly massive, and should not just be placed on the carpet. I have an old VCR stuffed behind my desk (nowhere else to put it) that I was planning on putting the brick on. will that be okay?

I don't actually own a 360, but I've heard horror stories about it being vertical. If you accidentally knock it over, the free-floating disc drive could shred your disc.

However, I don't know if all models use that disc drive or not. I just have a few friends who have lost their games to it.

    Don't copy that floppy!

Ehhh, Id lay it down. I used to stand my PS2 up until I dropped a few discs taking them out of the disc drive. Also if its standing up, it'll be alot easier for it to wobble around.

Just make sure to never shake, or move the thing when theres a disc spinning inside. Its never happened to me, but other people have had it make big circular scratches around the disc making it unplayable. Just make sure its on a very stable surface that wont jiggle around when you bump into it, or stomp your feet around it and it should be fine.

While this guy flips the console around on purpose to show it happening, Ive heard of people bumping into whatever the 360 is sitting on and it ****ing up a disc.

We've been going vertical ever since we got it with no probrems.

Horizontal here. My brother even managed to knock it off while I was
playing a game, disc was fine.

Horizontal. I tried tipping mine vertical and it didn't like it very much...plus I'm clumsy and drop stuff and bump into stuff. I haven't had a problem so far with it laying on my endtable.

Vertical myself due to space constraints. Mine RRoD'd on me once before a year had even gone by, but I had an Elite that had the old chipset in it. I've only had my new one (Best Buy replacement FTW) about 3 months so far, and nary a problem. Then again, you've seen my setup. It's all securely inside of an entertainment center, so there's really no danger in my case of it getting bumped or jostled. My PS2 (like I even use that now anyway) is also vertical, as is my Wii. I know for the PS2 at least, if DREs are an issue, vertical positioning does help it read the discs better, but not sure if that's also true with the 360.

I'd like to place one of my Gamecubes vertically as well. olol.

                    I've always preferred vertical.

I prefer vertical, but because it is in the game room now, i have it set up horizontal.

Vertical. Horizontal systems is so 1997.

I suggest horizontal if you can.

                          Ruining your discs sucks.

Getting mine last night, I set it up at at the girlfriend's place (big screen TV) horizontally, but only because her cats would probably knock it over otherwise.

I have a launch, no problems on horizontal. The few times I've tried vertical it makes more noise generally and tends to get the DRE equivalent more often (one of my games is prone to this no matter what, despite taking good care of it and no scratches).

Additionally, I don't think they make them with the separate power brick anymore (so I've heard).
Took me 15 minutes to remember how to change my signature, and this is all I came up with.
