..begins with the main character having serious amnesia. He doesn't remember his own name, much less his profession (knight) or any of the people he meets that claim to know HIM.
The explanation is given later in the game:
One of two gods, gatekeepers of "The Nexus" (in this game, it's a second dimension where anyone who enters is forgotten by everyone outside of it), abducts the main character's girlfriend - not princess; that's been done to death, eh? Anyway, she is taken to his castle also independent of the Nexus. He then opens a portal so vast to consume the entire world she had come to know. This makes her forget everything.. except the main character. Kind of a "love conquers all" theme here..
The bad god realizes this, at first assuming he somehow followed them into his castle. Then he goes to find the main character on Earth (which is still in the Nexus) so he can kill him. The other god (we'll call him the GOOD god) finds out what he's up to. He finds the main character first, opens a portal into the castle so he can save his fair lady, and assumes the main character's form. Unfortunately, he doesn't realize the world is in the Nexus; this causes our main character to lose HIS memory of the world as well. A battle ensues that eventually seals the bad god somewhere on Earth. The main hero and his girlfriend lose their memories, apparently, by exiting the castle the wrong direction at first. The good god returns the world, albeit too late. But at least the main character and his bonnie lass make it home in SOME shape!
Cliches ahead!
Some greedy human with evil in his heart breaks the seal in search of power. Your mission: to seal the monster again.
.......complex, yesh?
