    WoW Nerd Rage!

Well, not really, but I do kind of wonder about something.

WoW's new xpac, Wrath of the Lich King, has been out for a total of five days, and already people are hitting level 80. ALREADY.

I am level 70. I have spent about two hours questing on my druid, and I have about 200,000 experience points. To get to level 71, I require 1,500,000 exp. This number only gets higher. I have been told that from 72 - 73 is about 2,200,000 exp.

I read a news article on the WoW forums in which someone posted that a kid collapsed from 24 hours of straight gameplay and little sleep/food, and the poster proceeded to say that the kid was a noob and that professional, hardcore gamers can do that sorta stuff all the time without any repercussions, and it was like some kid doing an evil knievel stunt and breaking his neck or something.

Am I the only person who thinks that "professional, hardcore gaming" is completely SICK? Seriously, what idiotic loser wants to hunker down and spend 24 hours in front of a PC without doing anything else?

I love gaming and everything, but I just can't fathom spending that much time to accomplish imaginary goals like getting the best armor or whatever. I go raiding and get armor too, and I love collecting stuff because it's fun, but I play for about two hours a day and spend the rest of my time in real life. My life does not revolve around being the absolute best and bragging about all my digital possessions/prowess/accomplishments.

I don't know, I just find the whole "OMG MUST HIT 80 GONNA PLAY TIL I DROP" is the most absurd thing I've ever heard of, and I can't believe people do it. It's just disgusting.

    Your thoughts?

I always tell people I'm a casual MMO guy. And by casual I mean I play for fun. There's a large number of people in FFXI that are just as nuts, acquiring Maat's Cap (all jobs to level 75) and getting brand new jobs to 75 in a matter of weeks. Most of the guys in my linkshell have at least 3 jobs to 75, some have even 2-3 other characters, each with 2-3 jobs at 75 as well. They're almost always on.

Let the idiots fulfill their fake goals, I say. Once they reach it they'll have bragging rights for maybe a day or so, but eventually they'll realize their folly!
    ...and that's why.

There is no reason for anyone to play one game for that long in one sitting. None. He says that he can do that without repercussions, well he is wrong. They might not notice them, but it does take a toll on the body. The body cannot function properly without a certain amount of sleep and food.

Do you define "professional, hardcore gaming" as people who play crappy games for hours on end for no reason?

Because the top end of salaries in the professional BW circuit is pretty high iirc.

Blame Blizzard for wiping out every other computer game except from the ones Valve makes. :3

I stayed up around 34 hours straight back when Guild Wars had the weekend Nightfall preview event.

2 liters of Mountain Dew and I spent the whole time in some student lounge because my internet sucked.

Does that make me sick? Probably.

I'm 74, but I've really only had a few sessions where I sat down and played for hours on end.

The XP increase from level to level is actually quite small. It's been ~1.5 million for four levels and hasn't exceeded 1.6 million yet.

I'm only halfway through 70 on my Night Elf Hunter. The only time I've really sat down with the game was to get a Death Knight to 58. I really haven't had any "marathon" sessions.

Eh, I don't really consider getting the things in these games fake or imaginary goals. They are working towards something and getting it, after all. In a way these ARE kinda like evil knieval stunts, aren't they?

Other than that, yeah I'm really casual with my MMOs. I think I've played about four during the course of my life (star wars galaxies, everquest 2, city of heroes, and I've recently tried WoW), and I've never really gotten very far in any of them (never above level 30 in any of the traditional leveling games, SWG is a little more complicated to explain). I can see myself getting far in WoW, though. It's paced really well and everytime I play I feel I made some significant progress, even if it's just for an hour.

But yeah, big marathon sessions for any games and stuff don't mix well with me. I gotta like move like my legs and stuff.

If you want to know what's really disturbing, I was on wow the third day after the expansion when the first two people on our server hit 80...only 3 days after the expansion. There's even a level 80 DK on our server...so yeah, people can be pretty obsessed.

I spent a good portion of the weekend playing it, and I'm level 72...but I was leveling with someone and our combo is good for that sort of thing, plus there were several instance runs.

So yeah, I concure that it's just not right to play that long without rest. But then again, people sky dive and bunjy jump too...

Edit: This should actually be in the other topic.

If anybody here knows of Athene, he has a video of the first person to hit 80, Him and his group were mob tagging though, and they got their characters knocked back to 70...

I am about 6 bars to level 76. It isn't too hard to level if you are playing casually. But I just don't understand how DKs can be level 80 now.

I call Power Level scam! Unless they banded up in HUGE parties and took on super-high-level monsters together, I fail to see how they could go up 10 levels in 5 days! A decent nerd always knows how to spot another nerd who's cheating!

Technically if someone shares an account cause they live together and they switch back and forth between people playing one character all the time they can legitimately level given that they just do quests and don't bother with dungeons. Questing is actually the most effective way to level, and there are mods to help...like quest helper.

Grinding and taking down big monsters cuts XP cause you're in a group and is more dangerous (you can die and this costs gold and takes away from leveling time) than just questing the easy quests.

I'm only level 72 still cause I'm a little slow at leveling and I have a full time job, but I know people with DK that are already almost 80 and have the same kind of schedule I do. They just know how to level fast or have help from a friend.
