The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this was "Who cares." But I won't be mean and just say who cares.

I don't know, depending on the situation, like say your kid is ten or something but his school is far away and you'd like to be able to reach him. Stuff like that. But on average I'll just throw a number out there I guess... uh... and say twelve or so.

I did the "when you have a job" thing, so 16 in my case. Although, depending on your situation, your family's means and schedule and all, I'd say no earlier than 14, give or take.

I would give my kid a cellphone, but one that can only be used for talking, and have parental limits on chatting times.
